Posts: 33	Bike not starting after 24 hours of sitting 05/22/09 at 09:24:41 i have a 97 ls650 with 7200 miles on it just got a new battery and an oil change it has been riding great and then today i was going to start it up and it didnt turn over at all. what are some possible causes? any answers are appreciated thanks

It is possible the new battery never had a full charge. Get it fully charged and see how it holds up.

It is possible that one of the battery cables was attached loosely and has come off.

Is the headlight full brightness and the horn full volume?

It may be some problem in the wiring, starter switch, starter motor, or something else unrelated to the battery. Keep looking very closely at all parts of the starting system and wiggling wires, and keep us updated.

Know what? This is the third problem I heard of in past month with people putting new battery in, and it's not charged fully. I think it's worth for everyone: charge fresh batteries!! No matter what the seller says, charge it for at least few hours before you install it.
This may not be the cause of your problem, but it's happening.

And that goes for sealed batteries such as the Big Crank, too. ALL lead-acid batteries have an internal self-discharge. Few are fully charged from new. A new battery may have enough charge to start the bike right out of the box, but it still needs to be fully charged before use. And that really means it needs to be charged BEFORE that first start.

id pop the harness connectors on the regulator/rectifier, and check continuity between the red wire with the black stripe, and the black and white wire with an ohm-meter... check both polarities(red lead to r/b, black to b/w, and then vice versa)... you should get continuity in only 1 config, if you get it in both, then you have a blown diode(also inspect the connector pins and sockets, bad connections here can result in poor or no charge to the bat)... you can also hook a voltmeter between the pos bat terminal and the bat cable(removed from bat terminal)... with your key off, you should have no voltage(maybe a minor leakage voltage, like 1/2 a volt, no more though)... if you get a voltage reading, unplug harness connectors until it disappears, that shows the component group that's shorted, then connectors in the individual components, and you'll isolate a short if it exists... check the diode while you charge the bat, if it checks ok, then just install the charged bat... if it works fine the next day, you're good, if not, check for a short as described.... Wink

sparky only gets juice with the key "on", and only after the bat voltage goes through a few components... it really is a component you can entirely eliminate from your diagnosis... more likely culprits are ignition switch, brakelight switches, the decomp electrics, starter solenoid, reg/rec unit, stuff that hooks to the bat hot lead, as opposed to only having juice with the key on....

actually i remember reading the box for my battery and it said to "Charge battery before installation". did i listen? of course not. i installed the battery and fired up the bike. (needed a ride real bad) when i got back 15 minutes later.....i trickle charged it all night.

I agree, most batteries have a surface charge but are not 100% out of the box....
