PLEASE HELP!!!
05/19/09 at 11:56:18

Fellow thumpers PLEASE HELP! I’m at the end of my rope here I do not know what to do and I have already spent a fortune! BIKE WILL NOT START, well almost with a fully charged battery it will start! But will last only two days on the third day the engine seems to seize up! And I can’t even push start it! I have even put it in fourth gear (the highest it has) and when I pop the clutch the rear tire literally drags!

This is what I’ve done to the bike:
New battery!
New alternator
New pulse generator
New Voltage regulator
Decompression solenoid adjustment 4mm at TDC
Starter motor was inspected I was told it is still good

Lights are bright and voltmeter says my battery has 11.5 V (I should be able to push start it right?) it was at 12.5V when I bought it two days ago, I do not hear the decompression solenoid clicking but it was clicking when I installed the new battery it seems that the engine will not turn over. Is my decomp solenoid fried? Will that cause the engine to seize up?

Guys PLEASE HELP my last few posts were COMPLETELY IGNORED come on guys throw me a line here the thumper is my only transportation to work or anywhere!

Battery should be around 13.5-14V with no load. Can you charge it for few hours and then check?

After you do that, check that decompression solenoid actually moves the actuator lever! Click is fine, but it should move the lever quite a bit.

Your charging system is brand new, but still, check all connectors for rust and snug fit. A 1V drop on any of connectors will make charging very difficult.

It is really hard to push start the savage when there's nobody in the seat. And even then. The rear wheel locks up rutinely. No panic yet there.

Put it in neutral and open the screw in slotted cover on the port side of the engine. Remove the sparkplug. Use a 17mm socket to try to turn the engine over.
NOTE, TURN CLOCKWISE as you face the engine.  While it is gtrue that this turns the engine backwards, if you turn counterclockwise, you will unscrew the nut on the end of the crankshaft. All that you are doing is to see if the engine is seized up or will it turn over at all.
In fourth gear the engine should turn over when you pop the clutch.
That makes me worry that it is seized.

If it's less the 12v than you'll have to push start it.
But if it's been on the charger and doesn't come up, then it's got a bad cell, return it.
Is it turning over at all?  even with a low battery it should spin.
that would indicate the decompression solenoid is not working.
Check it.

second that on the battery charge. To rule out the battery's low voltage all together, try to jump it (another bike, car, riding lawnmower) to see if it least turns over. You can also try to jump (read: bypass) the solenoid with a screw driver to see if it turns over as well. I think Versy has it pinpointed, though.

Ok so i'm going to check if the motor isn´t seized by moving the crank clockwise first, then i will charge up the new battery and recheck all my alternator connections and then i will visually check the decompression solenoid to see if it is working, i'll let you all know what happens in a few days.

thanks all

Fellow thumpers thanks for all the help, after checking everything motor is not siezed i can turn it no problem, i have come to the conclusion that my decomp solenoid is shot, i have heard of having it MANUAL is that possible? i thought i saw a post where someone had it like that.

You may well have an issue with the decomp setup. I don't think the starter motor has the balls to turn the engine over with the decomp closed. If your battery charge is low, you probably don't have enough juice to operate the decomp. After fully charging your battery you say it starts, yes? When the bike is running you should get a reading across the battery terminal of about 14.8v, anything lower than 13v is not enough.
I had this problem myself recently. I found the problem to be at the white connector block under the pillion seat. Check the red wires that come out of the rectifier/regulator, one of mine was badly corroded. I just bypassed the connector block and spliced the wires together. Every think is cool now.

Anglo thanks for the reply your right i have a voltage of 12.5 across the battery terminals when its running i will recheck the wiring from the stator all the way to the battery just to be sure.

Thanks Guys!

The decomp only fires long enough for 1 rev.
If you think it's the decomp, you could back the bike up in gear till you feel the compression stroke then hit the starter.

You might want to check the battery to engine ground, it is a black wire that goes from the negitive terminal down to a bolt a little behind the oil sight glass. If it is missing or loose you can loose a bit of voltage going through the ground in the wiring harness.
