How many parts does a savage have.
05/14/09 at 07:10:41

I just did this on the GS500 site. We count assemblies as 1, like carb = 1, engine = 1, forks (both) = 1. Cos commonly you start splitting them, no one wants to buy it so ebay and here we dont - smart, but it is the way I'd count it.

Cables, hoses, grommets, bolts, rubber buttons and other rubbery BS like straps and trim and weather stripping etc is not counted.

2-4-10 of something = 1 as in all 4 turn signals = 1.

Then stuff that wont come off with conventional tools (wrenches, allens, etc) are 1, like the neck lock (How the F&(k do you get it off anyway).
OK so I'll start.
1. f wheel.
2. f. axle.
3. F Disk.
4. F Brake system (yes, dont split crap that got fluid in it).
5. F fender.
6. Fork legs.
7. lower triple.
8. upper triple.
9. Bar.
10. Risers
11. headlight.
12. Turn signals.
13. horn.
14. left switch.
15. Right switch.
16. Turn signal carriers.
17. clucth perch.
18. Cables.
19. Dash/speedo.
20. frame.

GS 500 ended with ~57 (on going count but doubt its going up drastically). I'd guess savage also ends up right around there.
Cool.
Srinath.

there are 4 types of tools for the neck "lockring"... one is a socket with protruding pins(ala dana 60 full floating axle outer bearing tool), one is a wrench shaped like the letter "C" with a bucktooth at either terminus of the "C"... one is like the "C" tool, only it has a single bucktooth(only engages 1 notch), and the last is probably the one used most often, a punch(really the ultimate wrong tool for the job)... suzuki dealers can get the right tool for you... if you have a lockring handy, you can go to a snapon truck(or their various competition), and the tool fool can match the wrench to the ring.... yes, a punch will "work", but it wont allow you to properly adjust the nut... kind of like using a hammer to turn a large nut....

Neck lock nut - I have made a tool for it - out of a 22 mm socket I believe. Because I do so many GS500 front end swaps.
Its not what I was asking though, the steering lock mechanism - that lock.
Cool.

#30 comes in many sizes shapes and configurations. It is a safety device if it works properly. If it doesn't ts'not.

Generally, to remove a cylinder lock such as noted, you will need the master core key. Otherwise, you will have to drill it out.

think it's a core key type like a best-falcon? the fact that the bike bandit fiche lists it as a "dealer repair only" kind of gave me the impression thay it's got a retainer you have to drill to get to.... like those mid-70s ford column locks, or a shear head retaining bolt like the same vintage gm's.... kinda need a cylinder in my grubby paw to be sure....lol

I had one when I bought a lock set off ebay.
Its not really one of those you need a master anything ...
I believe you turn it left - counter clock wise from the unlock position pull it forward and back to the straight up and down position and it will come sliding out.
I think that is how ...
Cool.

a "core key" just has an extra cut(or lack of a standard cut) to actuate a retainer... does the cyl have a hole in the face(off set from the keyway)? it really looks like a fairly standard wafer-lock, as opposed to pins(like on a desk drawer).... the retainer can be as simple as an extra wafer that rides a groove.... but usually the removal operation of a cylinder will require something more than the stock key, just to keep me from accidentally dis-assembling it on the street....

That lock actually has a 4 pin design and its one of the hardest to pick I have felt.
The pins are round and tiny and sit on springs in that projection it has. When you remove it, you're lining up one of the projections on the cylinder to that projection pullin it out 1 mm, then around a key way and back behind the projection ... if I remember (which is really really iffy at best).
Cool.
