FREAKED OUT about cam chain and tensioner!!!
05/03/09 at 05:11:53

I read up on the Verslavy and cam chain tensioner last night and now I'm concerned about the state mine could be in. So much that I'm scared to ride her now till I know for sure!!! My 97 savage has 21,846.7 km on it and I'm wondering if it has ever been looked at. I recently eliminated head light rattle and touched up the headlight and have noticed I still have some other noises. Cam chain possibly??? I recently modded the air filter, jets and exhaust too so wonderin if this may have caused a little more stretch?
I need to investigate but also want to make sure I have everything I need, ie exhaust header gasket etc and want to know where to get them at a fair price.
I will pm Verslagen and Lancer next about the parts but in the mean time I would like to hear about others experiences and findings regarding this topic.
Much appreciated everyone.

13,000 miles.I was riding it like this.I tried adjusting the valves, didn't help.I found this site looking for info.I've got the Verslavy(pinned to not come apart, and a second hole)I'm a believer, and the noise quieted down. Now I love these bikes.3 so far.

I got lucky and found someone who graciously made me a new extensioner:

The Verslavy, which you can order from Verslagen, is the way to go.  It's pretty much a fix it and forget about it deal.  I got mine made for free but it probably would have cost 2-3x as much as a Verslavy if I had to pay for it.

This is a verslavy...

The very 1st one in fact.
It thumps along very happily for the last 20k miles.

Price is posted.

There's a pinned plunger mod and a 2 hole mod.
The pinned mod prevents  Shocked freaking out.  Why?  because once the plunger is pinned to the housing it will never come out.  How about that for piece of mind.  Never, never worry about the chain coming loose and slipping a cog.  Never will you worry with every passing mile, is it time.  listen, hear a noisey chain, it's time.  No kapow, sputter, sputter.  Just clankety clank.  I still listening after 20k.
And the 2 hole mod allows you to reach the factory limits of stretch on the chain.

I just received my verslavy  Grin... and my performance cam too!  So that side of the engine is getting a massage!  As I open her up, the topend will become important as the valves, rockers and cam chain...
I'll post pics of my progress  Wink

Wolf plz do so, thinking along the same lines you are apparently. Make her the "savage" beast she deserves to be.  Grin

So I'll open her up and do the check as Verslagen suggests but I need a clutch cover gasket. Can I get one at any bike shop? Stealership? Part #, anything to make my hunt a little easier?

New Thumper Guy, I'm sure someone will come up with a reason I shouldn't have, BUT...

I just used some gray Form-a-Gasket type stuff instead of a new paper gasket when I did my tensioner extensioner.  It was Permatex with  a NAPA label, as I recall.  I'd have to get out of my chair and go look to be positive.  It worked great.  No leaks so far.  No hassle trying to find a place to buy it, either.

The only issue is the cover captures a gear on a shaft supported by the cover.  As long as there's enough clearance, no problem.
