marshall13=are u a motorcycle historian?! thanks for all the info, very indepth!

and i love the sound of thumpers...inline fours are just too "not raw" if that makes any sense!

and i was wondering who's bike that is because it's gorgeous!

lol... far from it... just blessed (or cursed) with a great memory, and used to be a huge harley buff... then schwarzegger rode that soft-tail in that lousy movie, and suddenly the wrong element was on harleys(lawyers, stockbrokers, orthodontists, etc)... so, my motorcyle tastes moved south on the cost curve.... lol

The name probably derives from the "thump - thump - thump" sound made by singles at relatively low RPM.

And there is low rpm and not much else. High speed, but still low rpm.
Cool.

To use a phrase from Marvin the Paranoid Android, "I ask for information only." What would be your definition of low RPM? Others on the Forum have complained that the Savage/S40 revs way too high at highway speed. It turns about 4000 at 60 mph, which seems to be right in the middle of the pack.

Using the old rule of thumb that says 4500 feet per minute of piston speed sets the RPM limit of the engine, the S40 would limit at about 7300 RPM. It is reported the S40 has a 6500 RPM rev limiter in its CDI, which gives about 10% safety factor. While it doesn't turn the revs of sportbikes, I don't think I'd classify it as low-revving.

Harley already has Block head. It was the name for the evolution engine introduced in 83.
The Savage is a thumper, plain and simple, with or without the chrome side plates on the rocker box.
It is a time honored name with historical signifigance.
