welcome, just so you know, there's a clear coat over the metal.

Try fine steel wool.  NeverDull works well.

the metal peice right by the clutch. its round. not sure what it is called. ok so the best bet seems to be steel wool(SOS) and some chrome polish???

and elbow grease. My 88 was all white corrosion and rust (sitting for 12 years in NY outside) and now it's nearly mirror-like. Time and patience.

Pics kinda suck but you'll see what I mean.

Sakura - my recently (fall 08) acquired 86 was the same color as yours. In fact before I saw it, I never even knew suzuki made that color in the savage.
Mine has 2500 miles, was bought in 90 ridden till 91 and parked while the owner had to leave for alabama in a hurry and forgot about it he said. He said his uncle had it in a storage building.
It had carbs had black tar in them, the gas tank was ironically empty having been emptied into the carbs and the air box and then presumably to the ground ...
But it had fresh clean oil, and a broken starter clutch. I would have guessed someone had tried to start it after the owner fled, and  busted the starter clutch, taken it to the shop, found out what the cost was, and refitted it hoping no one will notice.
Anyway, my paint was decent, all the metal that was chromed was pitted with rust. Someone told me that was due to the place having lots of chloride ... like pesticides around the bike.
Anyway I have much of it powdercoated for now in the same blue as the body.
Cool.
Srinath.

Very confusing about the hot metal piece.  You said it was next to your left foot, then that it was next to the clutch.  The clutch (lever) is on the handlebar at your left hand.  The shifter is at your left foot in front of the foot peg.  Are you talking about the stator cover at the bottom of the left engine assembly, in front of the front belt pulley?
