I shift every 10mph, no problems at all.  and the rpm's aren't low, about 3k.  The rpm drop into 5th is about 500 rpm, the rest near 1000.

At 75 in 4th, rpm hits 5500.

I have an 07 and run a tach. Like it was said on here you should be able to go down to 40 mph 5th gear and pull away smoothly if your carb is set right. On mine, 50 mph is 3,000 rpm and 55mph is 3,500rpm.

Hi Tex

The vent from the gas cap got clogged once and mine would die while I was going down the road.   The amount of gas in the tank determined how far between unexpected stops is what gave it away.

Good luck with it.

regarding 4speed vs 5speed on the freeway, very little difference in rpm.  The final drive ratio is a little higher for the 4speed.

There is a member who says his 5speed screams to go freeway speed.  He's had other bikes so don't think he's squeemish about turning some rpms to get her going.  But w/o a tach, no way to know for sure.

Redline for this bike is 6500 rpm.  That'll take you to 100mph in 5th.  The average stock bike will run out of breath somewhere between 80 and 90.

Gas cap has a vent in it.
unless it's a california model, then there's a vent line underneath.

okay i think mines a cali model it's got 2 breather  hoses going from carb to sitting on bottom of tank, i cleaned my kickstand safety switch with wd40 hoping that'll solve it if not i might check the connection down there and see if the vent hoses are blocked

Dang, you got off easy. That's supposed to just suck the tank flat. Wink
