I am planning a trip and at times we will have to cover several hundred miles between fuel stops. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

And here I've been trying to give my old tank away for the cost of shipping.

I've got a Harley 5-gal. SoftTail tank on my Sav and there's others on here who have done other tank mods.

Another option for you is to add an auxiliary tank on the back. I have a four gallon on the back of mine as well as the fiver. You have the advantage of being able to remove it from the bike when you want the sleek lines of an around town cruiser. The company I got mine from has several different sizes and uses very heavy duty mounting hardware.

How much of a challenge was it adapt the softtail tank to the 650? Do you get adequate clearance for the stock handle bars? This sounds just like what I'm looking to do. I don't think I can use the auxiliary tank.We will have pretty much gear with us. This will be a month long ride. Who knows how many miles. You can guess, old G.I. buddies ,20 years since we have been together.Who knows what will happen. Should be interesting since we have all kept in touch and been riding since our younger days.

If you're not riding with two people on the bike you can get a lot of gear on a 650. Check out the picture of my Savage fully loaded on a 4,400 mile trip to Miami and back. Loaded like that I still could run 70-75 mph and keep up with the Sturgis crowd - until I couldn't take the noise.

As to converting for the oversize tank, there's lots to do but none of it's terribly difficult. I had to move the starting solenoid thing and make a longer cable for it, reroute some wiring, move the electronic doo-hicky that's on the spark plug wire, adapt the front of the seat mount (I have a different seat as well) and a ton of other trial-and-error things. And there's really no room for the chrome on the top of the motor on my bike with the different tank.

I got the tour tank first and then picked up the Harley tank with a dent from the dealer for $50.00. It's nice to have the 400+ mile range between fill-ups if I'm out in the boonies or want to wait for a better price. That being said, after all the work, skinned knuckles and trips to the hardware store, I might think differently a second time around and just go with the tour tank and act happy with 250 or so miles between fuel stops. Then again, I do get asked "What the hell'o kind of bike is that you're riding" every now and then, so . . .

I put a 6 gallon Road King tank on the FireLizard with very little problems. I did not move the decomp solenoid but just mounted the nose of the tank a bit higher. I don't get the full use of 6 gallons but I can get about 250 miles to the tank and that is with Lancer's performance cam installed and re-jetted.

Yup, that's a hitch on the back. Had a welder in N. Dakota make one up for me. None of the regular hitch fabricators would do it for a bike this small. We sat done with a pencil stub and the back of an envelope and figured it out in about five minutes. He does really good work and the rest is history. Details are on here somewhere if you want to know more about it.

It is 3.7 galons and the kawasaki had a fuel guage, which will be incorporated with the tank when I get it on. Seviersavage

Now that it is almost done though I like it a lot. It is sort of like the one Demin has on the purple bike but it holds more gas.
