just a couple stupid questions

I finally got around to putting my forward controls on from Ed L, wouldn't have taken near as long except for I forgot to put the cross brace in the first time so I had to take the right side all the way back off.... Angry  But while I had it off i looked into take the top of the carb to do the white space mod but the first two screws i attempted to take out spun so was just wondering if anybody had any quick fixes for gettting those out.

Screwdriver twisted in the slots & messed the head up?

Cut a slot across & use a flatblade. Get a handheld impact. Replace the screws with allen head stainless steel. Dont forget a bit of Antisieze is a really good thing.

Short of drilling the heads off the bolts and using an EZ-Out or vice grips to try and get the remaining stud portion left I'm not sure what else to suggest.  You could try an impact screw driver but if they're spinning, not sure if that would work.  Luckily the PO either put some anti-seize on the top carb bolts or they weren't a pain for me.

I have notived many have switched to allen head screw/bolts for the carb... are ther other areas of the engine where this mod would be beneficial? (sorry for the thread hijack)

Also, where can you get these allen heads crews and what quality do you need.

Thanks

For a complete ss bolt kit, there's on on ebay for $35.

almost complete, lacks bolts for the carb, but if you ask, I bet he'll include.

When installing these, it's best to use some anti seize.

Big,

Most (if not all) of the screws in the Savage carb are not meant to be operated on with a Phillips screwdriver.

The correct screwdrivers to use are JIS screwdrivers.  A source I've used in the past for these is:

Ames Supply

If the screw-head has a small "dimple" by the cross-slot, it calls for a JIS screwdriver.

IHTH!
