If you have the title or registration, the VIN will be on those as well.

Japan manufacturers use JA through JT as the first two letters.

darn if I can see how that second letter in your photo could be any of the letters between A and T.  Huh

Can anyone else make out that second letter?

The first part is pretty much standard, anyone with the same year will have the same.  The stampped stuff is what's important.

Mine are js1np41a for a '96

Being block lettering, the mystery letter has to be a "S".  So does that mean it's a '96 model engine?

Somewhere I have the whole breakdown, but obviously not immediately available.

From the net...

VIN codes on all motor vehicles sold in North America may be deciphered as follows
Using Vic's as an example:  JS1HM31A2G2100951 breaks down thusly:
J Japan (Country of Manufacture)
S Suzuki (Manufacturer)
1 Motorcycle (Vehicle Type)
H "Type and Line" (Beats me)
M Engine displacement (Evidently M=500 or so)
3 Engine Type (Evidently Two-stroke, multi-cylinder!)
1 "Design Sequence" (Beats me again)
A "Model Variation"
2 Check digit, mathematically computed from remainder
G Model year code, F=85,G=86,H=87,J=88 (no "I")
21 code for actual factory, 21=Toyokawa
951 VIC'S WAS 951ST IN SEQUENCE DURING PRODUCTION.
Earlier numbers, like 001 through 005 or so are usually destroyed, as they are "Production Prototypes"
The "first" WW was number 0883 and that there were 99 WW's sent to Canada

I'm gonna close this thread and go get my money back.

Thanks to all who replied.

It was a parts bike bought on a bill of sale and I thought it would be a good idea to have it legally in my name because I thought it was a 1999 and had a 5 speed and might like to swap motors for that.

As it turns out, under some spraypaint is an emission sticker identifying it as being legal per 1987 standards.

For reference, here is the best Suzuki Vin info I can find.

http://www.motorcycle-journal.com/forum/tips-training/5800-how-decode-vin-num...

Thanks again,

Dan

I don't think it's a 5 speed.

The year code and the emission sticker both say it's a 1987 year model.

It's not running, or complete for that matter.
