In my opinion the Verslavy is an easy install, and it has the beauty of having Verslagen advise you if you need help. I think this is the best mod you can do to the Savage, and an important one. He sells it cheaper than it would cost you to copy it, plus it is time tested on other people's bikes, which protects yours from being the guinea pig. You can't lose.

You would need to quantify what's a 10 for you? And what's a 1?

Is it the amount of time that it takes, effort, or the amount of bucks you can cost you if you screw up?

Effort wise, nothing is harder than changing the rear tire. And the easiest is the front brakes. of course I'm not going to include sh!t like changing fuses and light bulbs.

Time wise, cam chain is about the most I've had to endure so far. And cam would be the same.

Cost risk wise, cam would edge out chain. Another problem with these 2 are the bolts thats secure the head cover, very easy to strip out a couple taking out and putting in. Not much risk in changing out the Verslavy. On occasion, the gasket is reuseable. So if you planned on replacing it, you win and got a spare for later. The only thing that might break is the cam on the clutch lever.

Part of the difficulty level relates to tools. If you have an impact, then a tool to hold the clutch while you put the nut back on wont be needed.

The haed cover doesnt use a gasket, so the gasket sealer thickness affects the oil film thickness. An even, thin coat is required & there are places it shouldnt go that are very close to where it must go. Spend the time to get the area clean & dry & have it looked at & figured out before you start applying the goo.

Keeping the side cover bolts in order is important, since (IIRC) 3 have rubberized washers to keep oil from leaking & some are different lengths. A pencil line drawing of the sidecover with slots to hold the bolts in their respective locations will make it a lot easier.

Most jam a penny in the gears to hold things while they bust the clutch nut off. I didnt like that & use a piece of leather folded double, but there are no reports of damage by the penny. Makes sense, since the gears are plenty hard & a penny is as tough as it is valuable.( Read: Not very)

With patience, none of these jobs are actually hard. Getting the chain on the cam & keeping the timing right can be a test of patience, but its not technically difficult. Just make sure that the timing marks on the left side are where they should be when the cam lines are horizontal.

The Cam chain is the hardest of the three. About as hard as changing the water pump on a newer car.
