replacing stock muffler with a slash-cut tip...

I have a 03 LS650 and I want to do away with the muffler. I found a 8" slash-cut tip I can put on in it's place, but it's just a tip, no muffler, no baffle, no nada... What will this do to my bike? other than bother my neighbors. My bike is all bone stock, just under 4,000miles and clean.

This is just an idea I am looking at, no changes made.

Anyhelp you can give would be great!

I saw the other thread about using Harley mufflers and re-jetting. I now understand more but, how bad will my performance be if I run straight pipe with a tip? Maybe change my air box to a cone or pod? and as far as jet settings, where should I wanna be at?

I really wanna mod my bike, but I don't wanna jack it up.

Suggestions???

I'm running a Jardine slash-cut which is pretty much a straight through pipe. I have the "OldFeller" intake mod which is holding up wonderfundel. As far as jetting goes, all I had to do was open pilot screw a little and remove the white spacer from the needle. The Main jet is still the same as it is running great with it. BTW my riding style is mostly back roads 35-40 mph on a AF base and it is RARE that I'll go WOT. I had my fun with a Ninja and now I'm ready for some looks, noise, and relaxed riding. My modded-out savage fits that.

Sweet! Thanks. I too am burnt out on riding fast. Had a 91 GSXR750 back in the day. Before Wife, Kids, the Air-Force and turning 30 something. What base are you at? I'm in California at the 144FW, ANG but I still love it! Working on getting a Active Tech. spot, but we will see.

I put the tip on today just to see how it runs... FREAKIN' LOUD!!! Grin
Gotta give it a lil' more gas when taking off, but it seems much faster in the 60-80mph range. Has a sweet spot where it is not too loud and cruises clean @ 55mph. I dig it! In town there is a quiet 35-40 range, but it jumps up with just a slight twist.

How long you think I can run it like this without re-jetting? I don't wanna jack it up. Never jetted a carb before, but I'm a fast learner! Wink
I'll take some pix soon as I put the Black Thermo-wrap on the pipe.
Should look pretty sweet!

Check your plugs!  That open exhaust will have you running really lean.

In my limited understanding of exhaust, your open pipes are "ideal" (getting the most exhaust out the fastest).  But sometimes "ideal" is not....well....ideal.  Open pipes loose torque but increase top end RPMs, but usually in areas that are not useful for our bikes (cruisers).  Mufflers tend to close up the exhaust and increase torque in the low RPM end over the high end.  Think about where you run your bike most of the time in the RPM range, where you want your power most of the time and work toward that setup.  Least case you could put a "lollipop" in your tips to help with the low end torque (take off).  Here's some interesting reading on it:

That don't look too bad, I may do something similar. I have an exhaust leak where the muffler meets the header, but it had been welded on (prior to me having the pipe) So I can't just take it off and tighten it or whatever.
