plug cap or head gasket?
04/12/09 at 11:02:25

When I took the little chrome covers off the head I noticed there was a lot of grime and what not in the little area where the spark plug is. I've also had a little oil on the side of the engine . How do I know if this is the plug cap or the head gasket?

I've noticed leakage from the parting line above the sparkplug, but most likely oil is seeping from the head plug as well.

Only way is too completely clean this area and I think someone said spray with foot powder, but I think that was in a different area.  Any way clean and inspect later.  You can get your fingers to touch the bottom of the head plug (after it cools) just reach as far as you can around the exhaust header and up.  Oily fingers would be a dead giveaway.

Looking at the header, there's a hole to the left side of it.  Reach in with your left hand, palm to header.

Which way does the bike lean when on the sidestand.....

Also, get a real bright flash light and look around the head area.  You will see that the hole up above the header actually goes in and around and ends up at the sparkplag.  So, when riding down the rode, that oil slowly leaking from the plug gets blown over to the right side.
