What material to use as a seat cover?
03/30/09 at 14:04:56

So I am in the process of re-doing my seat.  I have the 2 piece seat that came stock on a 98 Savage.  I pulled all the staples out and took the ripped and trashed stock vinyl seat cover off to find the foam was soaked through!  I plan on doing my seat like DiamondJim did his with minimal padding and spray foam.  My question is what type of material should I use to replace the trashed stock seat cover?  I'm thinking black vinyl but is there something out there better or more motorcycle specific?  TIA

I'd have to say that the sky is the limit but i'd just keep to something thick and preferably water resistant.  I just did my seat like diamondjim to but my seat cover was in good shape so i just reused that.  One trick throw what ever you do use throw it in the dryer for about 20min it'll soften it up so it'll strech better.

Options also include taking your seat, seat cover or both to a local community college where they often have an upholstery class.  They can make some seriously high quality covers at rock bottom prices.

After I get my seat pan I'm really thinking about looking into this.

I have been experimenting with this exact topic, but I am at a loss for securing the fabric to a metal seat pan..... any ideas?

metal prongs or rivets.... must protect the fabric/cover from the sharp edge

Attach some 1/4" thick plastic strips around the bottom edge of the seat pan with rivets or screws (trim the excess) and anchor the cover to the plastic strips.

Another trick to getting that good scalloped saddle look is when attaching the cover, lay the seat upside down on large bag of dogfood, rolled up pillow, etc.  The goal is to have even, curved pressure pushing the cover against the foam witht the countour od the seat while stapling.
