My '88 had a knock or would have a knock if I just put it back together. Turned out to be a burnt piston. We tried lot's of things to figure it out. Compression test, feeling the piston go up and down, feeling the crank round and round, back and forth, using a screwdriver to push the cam forward and back. After taking it all apart, the only evidence we found that you've might of seen if I had a borescope would have been a small indentation on the outside edge of the piston and the melted aluminum at the top of the cylinder.
