remove the front seat (10 mil bolt on both sides) remove the two retaining bolts (#10) at the base of the tank. remove the fuel hose and drain the tank. remove the petcock and slide tank backwards. lift up slightly and reach behind the speedo and unscrew the speedo cable. unplug harness and your done. this is the easiest way, sometimes you can squeak the fuel tank out without removing the petcock.
this is the only pic i have. im sure someone will follow up with a better pic

pretty straight forward, even if the instructions lack certain details like removing the vacuum line to the petcock or that CA models have a vent line which breaks near the back end of the tank.  But certain details if left out can be disasterous to some as the O-ring seal on the end of the speedo cable is a one of a kind and can't be replaced except by purchasing a new speedo cable.  But fortunately to the less dedicated to keeping it stock, an oring will fit in there and do a reasonable job.

BTW, I've never drained the tank unless I wanted to remove the petcock.

Unless you plan to leave it off for some time, you can leave it all together and have someone stand there and hold it.
