Does anyone know the size of the four screws…
03/18/09 at 16:34:13

Hi all. I am new to the forums and new to the Savage. Thanks to everyone's posts, I've become much more familiar with the workings of my '98 one-lunger.

Throughout my white-spacer adventures, I've stripped one of the four screws that holds the cover plate on top of the carb. I can't find the size in the Clymer or on any of website. It's my only transportation right now so I can't easily bring the screw to the store for comparison.

Does anyone know the size of those screws? Thanks for the help!

10-32 screws, I used a 3/4 inch length since that is the closest I could find at HomeDepot.

Mine were definitely metric. But I have an 05. Take one with you so you can match it to a new one.

It's a sweet change.  Last time I messed with the carb I swapped top and bottom bolts for allen heads. This morning I changed my main to a 155.  It took maybe 4 minutes tops.

"They are all 5M x .80 Pitch. I believe the top ones are 8mm long and the bottom ones are 12mm long."

Found mine at Lowes. Ace Hardware should have them also.

Thanks seviersavage for the link (apparently I didn't look hard enough) and also to everyone else's input.

I'm def. going to go with allen heads this time. Maybe it's me but a lot of the screws on this bike seem to be made of an inferior soft metal.

The "Philips" screws on the bike are not truly Philips. They are a Japanese variation, and Philips tools do not fit quite right. That means the screw heads WILL be damaged if you apply too much torque to them with a Philips screwdriver. That is the true source of the problem, not just that they are made of soft metal. Another thing to consider is that the screws are going into an aluminum alloy carburetor. Would you prefer to damage cheap screws, or would you prefer to strip the holes in the expensive carburetor?

I also went with allen heads. I think they look better and you can get at them a little easier with a ball end allen.
