Brake lever compatibility

Would anyone know if the brake levers are pretty much universal with regard to the year bike? I need a brake lever for an '87, and found a couple for later year bikes. It's bent from the fall. I could try and get it straight, but figure since I'll have to remove it anyway, I may as well install a "newer" one.

Just to confirm what you already might be thinking.
One from an '88 will not fit a '96 or an '02.
in particular the brake switch is different.
Awe, just straighten it.

Thought about that. Wood mallet and a little heat might work.

I straightened one, a hammer was all I needed.

They're cast metal, I've found that they're on the brittle side. If there's much of a bend, go with the heat and hammer.
