Stock airbox or pods?
03/06/09 at 06:15:02

With inline 4's its generally recommended to stick with the stock airbox because it is already precision tuned and pods give minimal if any performance increase.  Not to mention the excessive amount of time needed to rejet, fine tune, and sync 4 carbs.

This engine is foreign to me so I need some input.  I am going to order the jet kit from Lancer as I want the most performance out of my 650 and I already have a Harley muffler.  So should I leave the perfectly fine airbox or pull it for pods?  err ah "pod" Smiley

Those inline fours were already tweaked for performance and sold as farily hot bikes in their day.   The LS650 is not marketed as a performance bike.   Need I saw more....

Case in point.... the Honda 350 "Four" my friend here at work has, has as much HP as the LS650, when it's tuned correcttly  (key word... "when it's tuned correctly" ) ....  but that is truely a PITA to get right.

Exactly, so you are saying with the savage go for a pod?

It could be improved with a short extension between the carb and pod filter, aka partial velocity stack.  But there's not enough room in there to do it.  You have to elbow it which pretty much defeats it.

Unless there's a clear restriction some elbow shouldn't hurt. It's slightly better to have a bit of distance between filter and carb.

the v in cv carb likes the longer intake. so plugging a pod into the carb bell is not an ideal setup.

So you vote no?

Anyone know which one of these I should get:

I thought that model would be a good choice as it has a slight angle to it.  What is everyone else running?

I'm running one that was available via the store on the SuzukiSavage.com website... Doesn't seem to be listed there anymore though.

There was a list of K&N's that would work posted up about a week ago in a similar thread.

Well they do make an elbow that has the slightest bend in it. I don't see why that wouldn't work. It would get you a little more room and would change the angle. Would for sure work better if you didn't have stock airbox stuff left and the factory location of the batter box.

this should be a pic of a pod intake i made up for the dr650. i am not sure how it would work on the savage. the abs [black] plastic pipe fittings have better fuel resistance than the pvc. the plastic pipe parts are low cost, so you can buy a couple and try them out.

Nice Dr.  I think with the LS650 you could do a maybe a 2" straight extension.  The filter would be getting pretty close to the bottom of the seat.  Unfortunately I've got a lot of wiring crammed in that area.  But some tubing between the filter and carb is good for developing uniform, consistent flow.

i have a spare mikuni hs40 pumper carb left over from the dr650 install. so we have a mikuni bst40 cv carb and a pumper carb to mess with on the neighbors savage. yes, the pumper is a positive change from the cv. no more surging and the power rolls on from low rpm at least on the dr650. the hs40 is the harley version of the mikuni tm40 pumper, so most of the jetting has to swapped out. i do not expect the savage jetting to be to much different than the dr.
