Fuel Tank Question
03/06/09 at 04:23:27

I beleive I saw a post on here at one time about this but couldn't find it to reference. I purchased a tank which I was told came off an 87 which is the same year as one I am working on. My question is on the underside of the tank that I purchased up near the speedo there is a stem that looks like feul line would attach to. This does not appear on the tank that came off the bike. What is this and can I just put a hose on it and close it off ?   Huh

Without a picture I would guess its for a breather hose.

I would wonder if it was something with the CA emissions stuff.

Could be, the clymer mentions some sort of emission recycling system on CA models.  Wonder if it sends vapors back into the tank.

Either way you should be fine by just plugging it.

BINGO.... you win.

The CA model is design to capture the vapors from the tank and run them thru a canister that goes on that funny bracket under the bike.   Also, the carb vent lines that go there.  Then....a vacuum line runs to the carb.

Choices are:
1) to cap it, making sure it's clamped so it doesn't leak.
2) Run a line up high somewhere to let if vent, which would also stop and gas cap spillage from expansion if you accidentally fill it too high.

cap it only if you are using a vented cap.

WooHoo!  Do I get a prize?  That was a pretty good guess for a dummy like me.

I am guessing the cap that came with it is not vented but how can I check to see if it is or not?

It's kind of like checking to see if the puppy is a boy or a girl. You have to start by turning it over.

don't think it would suck it flat.... no fuel pump..
But it will probably not flow right and starve the engine....

cap the vent tube, put the gas cap on, and pump just a couple of pounds of air up through the petcock opening..... listen for air venting out the cap...

if it's not vented, you can take the cap apart and remove the vent plug.... I've done it on a V-Star, but not a Savage....  I found a little rubber stopper where a steel ball bearing should have been... swap to the ball bearing and okie-dokie...
