mini turn signals ?

I have a question about installing mini turn signals on the front and rear. I removed the oem signals ( working properly) and hooked up the minis . Now here's the problem - they will light up but will not blink. They are 2 wire light so are not hooked up to the running light wires in the front. I experimented and installed oem light up front and the minis in the rear and they blinked although not as well as the oems on the front and the back.
a friend mentioned I may have to install a current limiter ? Has anyone had this type of issue and does anyone know what a current limiter may accomplish? Thanks for any advise !!

Reply #1 - 03/03/09 at 17:38:03 You will need an electronic flasher and not a thermal. They sell them at auto parts stores. Its round and has two terminals on it in the shape of an L. The stock one is under the tank on the right front side and is square.

FYI- the front turn signal wire connectors inside the headlight, one black connector with 2 wires and one gray connector with 2 wires, are both supplied with 12V. Both wires in each connector is powered. One is constant 12V and the other is flashed.

The third wires for the stock turn signals, the corresponding brown and green wires with bullet connector enclosed in clear plastic, are the grounds.

If the signals are bulbs, they should work.... if they're LED's they should blink at double speed with the stock flasher.....
Savage_Amusement has it backwards... you need a thermal flasher for led's... it blinks at steady rate regardless of load.... modern electronic flashers are made to blink double speed if the load drops, to let you know you have a bulb burnt out... they read LED's as burnt out bulbs, due to the low current draw and blink at double speed..
My guess is that you have the wiring wrong on the front blinkers,... like Diamond Jim says,..feeding constant running light juice to them...

Rear turn LEDs are no problem. To have LED front turn/running light combo the LEDs either have to have separate circuits and LEDs dedicated to each purpose within the LED light housing or you have to run separate LED turns and LED running lights up front. That's not necessarily a bad option. You get more light up front. Just orient the LED turns either higher or wider than the running lights and make sure they are of equal intensity or that the turns are a little brighter than the running lights when flashing. To do this simply use the "flashing 12V" wire + ground to operate turn signal LEDs and use the "constant 12V" to operate the running light LEDs. You can run both sets of light back to the corresponding brown or green wire for ground. LEDs have such little load it won't hurt the wiring to have a pair share the same ground.

Thermal is based on heat, which led's don't put out. Electronic is not based on heat and can account and adjust for the loads.

Even LED specific flashers are electronic based.

This has been talked about several times and having done it myself it is an electronic flasher that works.

Thats the beast and for 8 bucks I tried and shazam it works perfect not an electrician by trade but i checked and tripled checked the front wiring and it doesnt look like i had them hooked up to the constant power. (if that were the case wouldn't the front lights have stayed on without turning the turn signal switch on?) Anyhow I installed the electronic flasher and it solved the problem. Thank you
