So here is the deal I picked up an 87 in decent shape 30,000 miles on it with a blown engine , it dropped a valve so head is creamed as well as piston and cylinder ... serveral hundred dollars in evne used parts but I paid only 450 for it and he was nice enough to deliver it too ... and while debating what to do another bike a 2002 salvage title came on the market for 600 ... all cosmetic damage but the repair bill at the dealer was over 2200 so it was totaled on paper ... lots of little stuff to replace but the engine has only 1300 original miles and it is a 5 speed .. but to retitle in NY is 300 dollars plus ... so do I move all the cosmetic parts or pay to retitle or do the heart transplant engine & wiring harness "the big job" and move every thing to the 87 rolling frame and part out the rest of the 2002 ... 35 degrees in the garage and way to cold to start the work ... yet ... it is going to be a fun project with my 17 year old son who will get the bike when it is done ... should be interesting ... will keep you guys posted ... great site thanks for all thw great info guys keep up the good work

The 02' will have a higher resale value.  You just have to figure out if the extra $300 to get it re-titled in your state is "break-even" or not.

Easiest & fastest thing to do is get the '87 running with the '02 engine wiring and handle bar switches (the push button to cancel turn signal is nice to have)  .
