Look what I found!

I remember reading a post or two on here about some of the #4 washers that you can buy at the hardware stores used for the white spacer mod being a little too large in diameter.  Maybe the major suppliers are making them just a tad bigger.  I don't know.  Anyhow, back to what I found- my mom's neighbor was a retired machinist but his workshop in his garage hasn't seen any action in at least the past 25 years or more.  Tons of dust covered stuff in it though.  I was looking through his workshop and found a gazzilion of these washers in three different thicknesses.  I figure they've been in his workshop since the 1950s.  I had to use my wife's $1K camera and try different lenses to get these close-ups.

The black one is the thinnest and it's aluminum.

What are the specs on her camera? Smiley I enjoy shooting with my Nikon D80, so I'm always interested in hearing with others get a chance to shoot with.

Those D80s are sweet.

Hers is a Canon Rebel XSi.  She's got about 8 lenses.  The one I used for these pics was a Tamron 28-80mm F/3.5-5.6, no filter, with light via a semi-muted built-in flash.  I wanted to capture the foreground shadows to highlight the washer thickness differences.

Nice! I've got a friend who shoots with a Rebel. They seem to like it.

I had a D200 for a little while, but ended up selling it. I couldn't pass it off to family members and expect good shots, where with the D80 I can flip to "automatic" and the shots are still good. Smiley

I've got a 50mm 1.8 that I enjoy shoot with, a 20-40 Tamron lens and the 18-135 lens that came with the kit. I want to get a 70-200~ 2.8 lens, and I want to get a super wide angle lens (or fish eye) at some point... But for now, I've got bigger things on my plate (house, etc).

I've got a good friend who went to school for photography. She's got everything... Lenses, studio stuff, lights, everything.

Anyways... back on topic! :-P

I'm wanting the Canon EF70-200mm /f2.8L.

Regarding the washers, when I did my white space mod I removed the white spacer and put it all back together.  I may have been running a little rich but with the new custom exhaust it's probably a good match now.  So i don't really need the spacers but thought someone else may be able to use them.  The different sizes would allow a good fine tune capability.

If I want to turn the outside diameter down on a washer I run a bolt thru it & put a nut on it & stick it in a drill & spin it & run a grinder against it. It works with a stack of washers, too. Then have to file the bur off, but thats no biggeee. I guess a whetrock would do it, too, just slide it around on the whetrock.

Hey Simon - I shoot with a D80 too. 3 Nikon lenses: 18-200mm, 75-300mm and a 105mm macro.

I had an 18-200 VR lens... Ended up selling it last week because I didn't use it enough. And, there wasn't much difference between my 18-135 (and that, aside from VR)... But, I've got a Slikk tripod that I use when I need a steady shot or an exposed shot...

Very cool though. Who would've thought the hobbies would span so much.

Alright now - Who own's a Festiva too? Smiley

Any dinosaurs like me out there, still using 35mm?

I still ahve to learn how to use a digital to get pix from the camera to a computer, and then learn what to do withthem after that.

In my youth, I was a pretty good photog, and still love my old Nikon 35mm.

Jerry - I was an avid 35mm film buff for decades. Had my own dark room since the mid 70's, even had some photos published. I still have my last Nikon film camera. Digital can be as hard or as simple as you make it. Edit your own photos on your PC and print them out yourself or just remove the digital card and take it to your local photo shop. They'll print them for you.

I still have my Nikon 35mm.  Will always keep that.  But... I do have the batteries out and no film in it.

Here's my entry in the photo compo! Three Small Savage Bits.

I'm using the FujiFilm Finepix F20 (<$100). I love it. Easy to use and great battery life. This pic is in macro mode which gives you a very short focal length close up. I'm no photographer but my pics from a recent wedding I went to were officially better than the paid photographer, although that was according to a slightly drunk recent husband! The camera is just point, zoom or not, and shoot really.
