Air Filter Rude Awakening
02/14/09 at 17:21:47

I just went to the dealer and found out a new air filter is over $30

It is time to review the posts on the plan "B" air filters.

I had assumed it wouldn't be much more than the oil filter.

Now I know why there as so many posts on this subject.

I've got one that I purchased new and only used about 2 weeks before I bought a cone filter. I'll sell it to ya for 15+shipping if you're interested.

Can you stand spending $4 to get one that so far has lasted 2 years between cleanings?

Thanks for the replys everyone. The link oldfeller posted is the one I was thinking of. It looks like a fun project and will consider it.  I use a K & N in my truck and like it. Its reusable and does help with the gas milage so it justifies the big bucks. I just hate to spend that kind of money on a throwaway item like a disposable air filter. When it warms up and I'm doing the spring start up stuff on the bike, I'll pull the air filter and see what shape its in. I've only got 7500 kilometers on the wee beast, so I just might get 2 years on the air filter. If I go the K & N route do you think I'll need to adj. the carb. jetting?? I have visions of tiny springs and screws going sproing all over place once I start digging into that!!!
The bike runs just fine for me in its stock configuration and would prefer to just leave it be.  When life affords me more time (ie retired), then we can have fun playing mechanic.

I just removed my filter, blew out the dirt/debris with an airhose, washed it in the sink with dish detergent, let her dry and re-installed. Looks just like new.

Sevier,

I will probably go that route eventually.  Lots of people trash K&N filters, but I've always had good luck with them.  I had one in a 1981 Gold Wing and never cleaned it......for 95,000 miles.  It was still keeping dirt out of the airbox and the bike still got the same gas mileage it did when it was new.

Question:  Did the K&N air filter you bought seem to seal well in the airbox?

TIA!

I took my stock air filter and soak in warm water for 5 minutes. Then carefully rip and cut out the paper filter leaving just the wire mesh.  Go to local bike shop and buy a sheet of uni foam for motorcycle carbs. Cut into shape and bond with silicone. Wait a few hours now to got a new filter that works like a K&N.  Now you got lots of extra foam to do your cars and other bikes too for 10% of the price. Why spend lots of $$$ for a K&N.  I have pics but don`t know how to post  up.

Dirt bag in land o lakes was ripping folks by selling them a pre-cut piece of thin foam and an instruction sheet for $15.  And that's a rip.

The original is 2" thick polyfiber new-foam, compressed by the sewing down to 1.5" thick.   It works just fine and is in use by several here on the list with no issues reported so far.

You can wash the original filter a few times, then it starts getting pretty plugged up after a while.   Once you've cleaned it and dried it, blow through it a time or two to check its porosity.

I just went down to one of the stealerships and picked up a 54mm Cone filter (generic) for about $13. Works great for me!
