87-05 Bottom end swap ??
01/25/09 at 17:00:26

Evenin all. Been considering getting a back up motor or even an upgrade for the wifes bike. I'd considered a new bottom end for the 5 speed mostly.

I've read thru most of the articles here so far ( i think) and i've checked ron ayers comparing part numbers.

I found a bottom end for a 05 s40 (with just over 800 miles on it). After checking, it appears that the engine covers will all swap over (correct me if i'm wrong). What i'm curious about is...

Will the clutch baskets and plates all swap over.
Will the 87 top end sit on the lower and timing chain work
(the 05 comes with a timing chain so..will this work with the 87 top end)
Will I need to change the front drive for the belt or are they the same.
Will the 87 starter work on the 05 block.

What will I have to watch for or need to do to complete this swap?
Any other parts i'll have to change out to accomplish this?

I appreciate any input the guru's would be willing to share.

I don't know this for fact, but I'm in the process of doing the same.  But my needs have changed since I've started so I don't know when I'll know for sure.

I've been told, no problem old top end on a new bottom.
There might me a difference in the primary drive.  But my '88 looks the same as a '96.
Clutch plates should be the same.
Covers I'd worry about.  I think there's a difference between the stator cover on the 2 years regarding the starter.
drive belts and pulleys same all years.
don't think a old starter will work with new.

Almost forgot, timing is different between new and old, you'll need to change out the CDI box.

Thanx for the info.

I'll have to go back thne and recheck the part numbers. According to Ron Ayers the 87 and the 05 engine covers are the same part numbers.
Thanx for the heads up on the CDI.I'll have to check into this as well then...

Memory is weak but check the primary gears...I believe there is a difference in number of teeth.
