installed cool alarm on savage
01/01/09 at 22:53:49

These holidays I took the time to
finally install an alarm on my bike.

I've personally never had a problem w/any
of my vehicles ever getting stolen or broken
into, but according to a lot of friends (and statistics)
I've been nothing but lucky; specially "bikejackings"
in big cities while waiting for the green light.

This alarm is REALLY cool, it's commercialized
as a "V4 virtual presence immobilizer" by Protec

What it does is that it kills the
electrical system of the savage by:
a) pressing the remote and waiting 20sec or
b) by separating yourself more than 100ft from the
bike (i.e. bikejacking / parking).

So basically if you are not there (w/the remote) it
WON'T turn over or the engine will die after 1/2 a
block; when parking no need to activate it, just
walk away; and no, you can't place the remote
w/the keys, it's tiny and that stays in your pocket.

(but I'm sure many brands have this system now,
theoretically any 12V car alarm can be adapted for
a motorcycle and what mainly varies is the size of
the main unit and the fact that the electronics are
encased in hard silicone making it water, dust and
vibrationproof. Price: $79dlls / Installation time 1-2hrs)

It also has a flashing blue LED (very scary for thieves Grin)
and a small button where you can input a 6 digit # in case
you lose or damage you remote unit and all is wired to the
bikes flashers which blink a few times when activating.

I hid the main unit IN the airbox w/o any performance loss.

notice the similarity between stolen and crashed bikes?...
most thieves steal them, to strip them, and sell replacement parts to squids that keep crashing them....
I wonder how many of the stolen bikes have stolen parts on them?.... Huh

I got my V4 alarm for about $75usd in a mom & pop
custom shop that mostly specializes in car audio here
in Mexico city where I live at the moment and installed
it myself; I still need to buy and install the optional
mercury switch (only $4.99 but was out of stock).

My particular alarm was made by protec security inc. but
I'm unsure  if it's available in the US.  Protects' homepage here:
http://www.protec-security.com/

----------------------------------------------------------------

I found in AMAZON.COM this alarm w/similar features for ONLY $24.99!!
http://www.amazon.com/MOTORCYCLE-ALARM-SECURITY-SYSTEM-ENGINE/dp/B001HBUKYC/r...

I also keep reading that the GORILLA and CYCLONE motorcycle
alarms, among others, are pretty popular in the US and Europe;
either way any alarm I think it's a good investment
...unless it's WAAAY TOO sensitive or you wire it wrong  Cheesy
