homemade luggage rack with a twist
11/24/08 at 19:34:38

I couldn't find a rack that was large enough for the savage so I came up with this one. It is 8x11 and the uprights go into the side rails where the sissy bar was.

And here is the twist, it extends to 8x17, and I also relocated my helment lock since my saddlebags made it useless where it was.

Sweet.   I wouldn't sell it for less than $200.  $300 if you're not a member of this Forum.

It would be easy enough to weld up a rack that clamped to the sissy bar but I wanted to lose mine so having the legs slide into the side rails seemed a reasonable option. But making it extend meant I had to create the flat tubing as sides. Thats a headache to weld up.

If I had to subsist on dollars from my fabrication skills I'd starve.

O.K. so I just did install it. My thoughts are taking the fender side rails off would have been easier. But I did get it on. I covered the forward part with a foam insulation. I guess cause I think it looks better. And I'm sure I can come up with a real reason if I have to.

Have you estimated the weight it can handle fully extended? Seems like you might need an angled brace from the upright to the middle of the loading surface to stiffen it if you did try to put a large piece of luggage or a milk crate on the back.  Certainly is a neat idea to have the extendable section.  And I have the same issue with my helmet lock being under my OEM bags and being useless when I have both bags on.

I wouldn't carry any real weight on it. But when it's collapsed I believe you could sit on it. I end up carrying flat boxes that don't weigh much so large footprint was more benificial to me. Besides too much weight way back there and I'd be poppin wheelies everywhere Shocked

Ha Ha. That thought occurred to me as well. A couple sacks of potatoes and you'd have a wheelie machine Smiley

Isn't that what the Wheelie Rollers are for?  (Not to mention you'ld have sport bike riders trying to figure out how to do the same to their bikes.)

This puppy looks great. My only thoughts are that when you put something on there you're covering your back lights. At night not so bad, but in the day time the brake light becomes invisible. When I put the extra tour tank on the back of my 650 behind the sissy bar I got nervous enough to install a big oval LED tail/brake light up on the back of the tank. Those cell phoners don't see us from the front or sides so why make it easy for them to miss us from the back as well.

A side point to think about. How cool would it be to replace the back pad with one of those? Then extend it back out a ways when you need the extra carrying room. Build a removable backrest onto the front of it and a removable seat pad for it if you want to carry a passenger. Just a couple of thoughts for when you go into production.

Jack
