Some one I talked with said I should either fill the gas tank up, or drain it out.

Thoughts?

I plan on putting a trickle charge on the battery.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can get water in the tank from condensation if there are wide temp changes, a full tank leaves less room for condensation to form...but the gas can go stale from sitting.  You can put an additive like sta-bil to keep the gas good.  An empty tank can rust, so you probably want to leave the cap off...
I'd go with full and add sta-bil if it's going to be for more than 4 months.

Forget the bike winterize the rider and ride on.

Keep the gas tank filled, plenty of Stabil in the tank (make sure you run the engine so the fuel stabilizer gets where it needs to be in the carb, Battery Tender  is always hooked up to the battery, parked in my garage with a cover over it.  Most important thing is go for a ride when the weather permits and there is no salt on the roads.  My coffee mug says Winter Sucks, but my favorite winter saying is " I cold ride keeps me feeling alive!

Thanks to a forum members suggestion, I received the Quadboss hand mitts today. They're well made, and the fit is perfect. Took the better part of one minute to install. Well worth the $18. Yes, gloves on. The type of glove will be determined by how cold it is. It can also be a tight fit in there, but can be modified. Cold air does penetrate the mitts, but it's nothing like riding with just gloves, or bareback.

More winterizing the rider tips:
There are times when you don't want to wear chaps for whatever reason. I found a pair of flannel lined jeans for $25 here: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=366820. I wore them today for a very windy 30 mile ride at 32F with two pair of military grade long johns under them. I wasn't cold at all, but my speed topped at only 45 mph riding the coast, so for highway riding, I would probably go for leather. Gonna order another pair of these jeans.

Sweaters & shirts. Wool is good. Not made in Asia is even better. I bought two of these wool sweaters made in the Netherlands: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=235069. Wearing military grade thermal shirts, long sleeve t-shirts in addition to a warmer shirt under the sweater. Over those go my leather jacket with liner.

Choose you favorite scarf and face mask or balaclava, and you're good to ride.
