Minority opinion here:
Mine only gets ridden about 1300 miles a year. It's my daily rider, but the trips are short. And, I'm not home all that often (I'm out riding one of my big street burners).
I just bought another OEM IRC tire for the rear. If I get a high quality tire, it will age-out before I can wear it out.
Something to consider if you are a low mileage rider.

I have the stock IRC tires on my 2001 at 2700+ miles - I don't know the datecode. Yeah it's a little scary but I looked them all over and I don't see any cracking and the summer grip was fine. Even so, I expect to replace them with 404s in the spring 2009 but run it around the block over the winter. Should I be more concerned with the cold weather operation in the meantime?

My '01 (see signature) still has the original rubber on it. Traction seems the same as ever, even in cold weather (note that all tires I'm aware of will provide less traction in cold weather).
YMMV, so be careful!
