In '65 was returning from Chicago to Detroit in the family's '64 Plymouth Savoy, slant six, auto.  Mum was in the back seat, snoozing.  Sis was sitting shotgun, also snoozing.  Clear open road, kept inching the speed up.  Got to an indicated 100.  Cool.

A Caddy passed me by doing at least 20 mph faster.   SIGH.  Back to 75......
Yeah, can do the ton, but why?  Others are faster.

Sort of Half English, Mum was a War Bride, British Army.  And, yes, I do drink tea, black tea, with sugar and milk.  But I'm lazy and use those new fangled "tea bag" things.

However "English" is a rather large group, the Island having been invaded a few times.  My ancestors were in the last sucessful group, the Normans in 1066.  I'm Norman English rather than Saxon English.  The Saxons had displaced the Celts who moved to Scotland and Wales.

While the Normans came over from Normandy, what is now France, they were not French.  They were Vikings that had settled in the north of France.  The Vikings pretty near went whereever they wished.  Except Scotland.

Somewhere in the past a Scot joined the family, Clan Cameron.  So I am also part Celtic.  Growning up I was told that my slightly darker complexion was from a Spanish great-great; but sis says mum now denies any such.

Mum, on her 80th birthday:

It's a lot easier on my father's side, straight Ukrainian, Zaporozhian Cossack.

When you do "the Ton", are you talking English or American?  The English use what we refer to as a long ton, 2240 pounds.  Except I would guess that they're now using a tonne since they've gone metric, which is roughly 2205 pounds.

Assuming that by "the Ton" we're talking the long ton since that is where the phrase originated, we have:

The Ton, English ---- 100 mph
The Ton, Metric -----  98.5 mph
The Ton, American -- 89.3 mph

If we really do go metric  the ton should be 100 Kph, or about 62 mph -- as in when going really really fast you are "going like sixty."

With all the speed cameras in Britain nowadays and the reduced speeds in the Nanny State- 60mph IS fast for there.

Gatsos respond well to an old tyre and a mugful of petrol. No need to fear them too much.

Yeah, but it's not from that.  Your accent is formed in your youth and is fairly fixed by age 15.  Years 1-11 were spent in Detroit.  Years 12 & 13, while my accent was still being formed, I lived at 18 Oak Road, Slade Green, near Erith, Kent, England.  When I arrived in the summer of '58 my Uncle Jack picked me up from the airport in his motorcycle-sidecar rig, a big two passenger sidecar.

Redline (6500rpm) in 4th is about 94mph...I think we run out of power before we run out of gearing...
max in 5th would be about 100mph,..if we could get there...

accurate, gps verified, tucked behind factory shield. Run out of room to try to go faster. mods below
http://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2007/11/03/bikepics-1076610-800.jpg

What did the factory speedo indicate at the same time?

The fact speedo indicated 98-99 mph with the stock tire.
At 60 on the sigma, it indicated 62-63. Now with the 140/90 rear it (fact speedo) indicates 59.

We all have thrown out different ways to get to the ton mark, mainly with engine mods and the chain conversion. How about aerodynamic changes, something to reduce our main enemy, air drag. My question to everybody is do you think there is less drag with saddle bags?. It's counter intutive but a set of bags cover up the sides of the rear tire and fender where I think there would be a lot of turbulance. I would think that they would also help smooth out the airflow coming off the rider's legs. Any thoughts on this or am I just tripping  Cheesy

Aerodynamic efficiency certainly is one of the areas that has to be looked at coax a Savage to 100 mph. The classic teardrop shape generally offers the lowest drag coefficient.  I would hazard a guess that properly designed saddlebags that tapered smoothly to the rear within the teardrop envelope would reduce the drag and turbulence.  Iif the bags extended outside the envelope they would likely add to the drag forces. You'd probably get more benefit from adopting more of a cafe racer style with aerodynamic fairings

Now if you put a jet pack in your saddlebags...then we may have a winner...  Smiley

My Baron's Tach shows 6,500rpm at 93mph in 5th gear. So does the tach run fast, or the speedo slow? At 60mph, the tach shows 4,200rpm in 5th gear.
