Wide open throttle??
11/01/08 at 09:37:30

As stated before I'm newer to the savage nation(not michael savage). I have a 96 with a new rebuilt carb(lancers magic) cone air filter and Dyna HD muffler. My problem is it seems hesitant at WOT and its hard for me to top out each gear without it hesitating, almost dont even know if Im getting all the "grunt power" Cheesy out of it. It idles GREAT sounds good and I've noticed a "slight" exhaust leak where I just changed pipes. But this hesitation was there with the factory pipe too with no leaks. Can someone point me in the right direction. I also believe Im running a little rich I'm workin on the correct mixture but where else am I going wrong?? Thanks all!!

Lancers the expert, but here goes...
fix the exhaust leak, either use a clamp that seals, aluminum sheet bushing from your favorite beverage, or hi-temp rtv.
test for the correct main jet, max out the rpm's while going up a good hill (70 to 80 mph in 5th) correspondingly slower in other gears on steeper hills.  It should take WOT to maintain speed.  Now back off from WOT 1/8 turn, does it seem to pick up?  yes bigger jet, no smaller jet or just right.

My guess is that you have the white spacer mod done and it's a little too aggressive causing it to hesitate when it hits the main.

Ok so it seems that if I back off a little I'll get the ability to gain a little power but not much before hesitation. Do i need to rejet? Thanks...

Sorry for hijacking- but I'm so glad you mentioned RTV

Even after buying a new clamp for my muff and shimming it, it still leaks.  Luckily I have a full tube of RTV laying around from the valve cover leak!

spence... Did you test?
Having the right jet you'll gain is a smoother transition and improved mpg.
Oversized jets it may run a little easier, but suffer low mpg.

Rob... Hijacking is going off subject, you've added your experience   Smiley

Also, try to adjust the thickness on your white spacer mod (if you've done the mod) as it sounds like this is a high rpm issue.

Just my $.02

You could also try putting the fuel petcock in PRIme and see if it makes a difference. At wide open throttle engine vacuum is minimum, and engine vacuum is what holds the petcock open. If you have made any modifications to the airbox or the air filter to increase flow, that will also reduce vacuum.

The white spacer should only affect transition from low revs/part throttle to mid revs/mid throttle.
Higher revs and WOT is down to just the main if it's a jetting problem.
