Screaming Eagle Pipe = ticket

So I put a screaming eagle pipe on my savage in April and have been riding with it without incident until yesterday. I got pulled over on the highway because the cop said my pipe was too loud. Got a $100 citation for it. The cop claimed that he was a "harley rider" and that he knew for a fact that screaming eagle pipes are never street legal and they dont even have baffles.... which he is dead wrong on... and he eventually realized when he stuck his knightstick in the pipe and found out there was a baffle.

Anyways, has anyone else ever got a citation for a screaming eagle pipe? I've heard bikes that are MUCH louder than mine, and I have never had trouble with this before. Anyways, I think this might have just been a jerk cop who was looking to give someone a ticket.

Thoughts?

Loud pipes are sort of going out around here in the last 10 years.

However your local laws could be more restrictive than the state. I work with alot of "know it alls" as I'm an officer and hate dealing with those types. Good luck...

You could goto court and ask to see it then if not, ticket SHOULD be thrown out.

Its not like that in Tennessee I know ALOT of people seem to think you can ask to see the "radar gun" db machine etc. But officers do not have to show them any tools used to make the stop. That was held up by the supreme court. And the same goes for the Db machines. Its the requirement of the defendant to prove its not within standards. Most laws vary alot from state to state...

yeah not sure what the local laws are here in Mass. But I know he didnt have a decibel meter on him. He said he pulled me over cause it shook his car... he was parked at a rest stop just off the highway... so its very unlikely that was the case. Unfortunately I think it is just one of the know it all types who was having a bad day.

I would appeal it but honestly having to take a day off work to go appeal the ticket and automatically having to pay a $50 court fee doesnt sound like a very good idea. Probably easier for me to just pay the fine....

usually the RMV has the state's laws pertaining to loudness, to include dB read (Usually A scale) and distance from muff to sound level meter.
If you can get the law's specifics, have the bike's loudness measured..if it's within legal limits, go to an inspection station and have them do it again for the record; if not, well, may be time to reconsider the muff. Good luck either way.

Excessive noise -- that's what we plea bargain our speeders down to 'cause it's a fine only-no points violation!

Sure, there's a part of us all that wants to fight this type of minor injustice as a matter of principle. Only problem is, the time and effort to do it is so out of proportion the amount of money involved that it's really not worth it to roll the dice in court.

Speaking of rolling dice -- are there any casinos within thumping distance? If so, ride there, have a nice meal at the restaurant, and then ride home. Don't gamble. By not gambling, you should more than make up the hundred buck fine! Grin

I got a fix it ticket with a jardene drag muff,it is a straight through muff without baffles, so I made a baffle from 1/8 " steel plate ,I placed the muff on a piece of paper and drew a line around it,then I glued it to the piece of steel,I took it to welding shop that had a huge machine that cuts metal,the guy kept chopping bits of it until it was almost oval,
I filed it to shape,took about two days,then I drilled a bunch of holes in it ,then put in the end of the muff about an inch in, and then spot welded it in place,it toned it down nicely but still had a great noise when I open her up.

Was there a truck around you that might of had a Jakebrake and when he looked up he saw the thumper going past. That would be a jealous Harly rider using he police powers to bust chops. I wonder how many Harleys screamed past him and he let them go.
