Bike Running Bad
10/02/08 at 13:55:55
My bike just started running bad sometimes. Sometimes I can get on it and it will run fine, but others it won't stay running. I have to keep it at about half throttle for it not to die, and even then it spits and sputters and smokes. Any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks!

What year is the bike? How many miles on it? have you tried moving the fuel selector to Pri when it is running poorly?
Lets start with Checking the Vacume line and make sure it is dry.

Yep, that's what I woould check too. Also, it might not be a bad idea to put an inline filter on the fuel line....keeps the crap out of the carb. Also, maybe the needle valve and seat are leaking...due to crap under them.

Ok, the bike is a 2006, and it has 3000 miles on it. I checked the vacuum line and there is no fuel in it. I bought the bike new 2 months ago, is that enough time for the carb to get gummed up? Could it be the spark plug fouling?

Just a point of clarification on the advice to look for fuel in your vacuum line
The presence of fuel in the vacuum line is a good indicator of vacuum loss.
The absence of fuel in the vacuum line is not reason to think the vacuum line is good. It may be split, cracked or poorly attached and you'll have sporadic fuel flow thru your fuel lines without getting fuel in the vac line.
Quickest way to find out if the problem is the vac line is if your bike runs fine on PRI, but acts flaky on ON or RES.
You should also check your air filter. If it is really clogged you're starving your engine of air. Not likely with a new bike, but worth a check anyway.

The bike starts running good when I switch it to prime. What does this mean, what should I replace?

Your vacuum hose from the carb to the petcock.
