Need help mounting tail bag
09/30/08 at 14:13:45

So I just bought this tank bag from fieldsheer:

I need some help mounting it. It has bungee cords running through the bottom but when i try to attach them to the chrome rails on the sides of the fender, they can't grab. It looks like the rail is a bit wider than the diameter of the hook and the end of the hook is bigger than the gap between the rail and the fender.

Should I be trying to space the rail out further from the fender? Hook it directly to the fender itself (doubt that anyone would recommend that, doesn't seem safe), or should i run normal metal hooked cords through the bag and use those instead?

Ok, I just found a way to mount it and want to get your opinion. There are 4 hooks. The front two are hooked onto the rod the suspension bolts to. There is no affect on the suspension movement though. The rear 2 are hooked onto the fender lip just behind the fender rail. Do you think this is stable enough? It feels pretty solid and the cords are being held at a good tension in these positions. I have posted pictures of the rear mounting point, front mounting point, and the hook design to help. Thanks.

Looks like it might work, but I always hate to have hooks in the fender, even if they are plastic.

Here's something you might want to consider if your tail bag will be on & off frequently:

It slips under the seat and gives you places to hook your bungees without using the fender rails.

You can buy it here:

Hooking on the fender make scratch the paint.  And, being it's right at the tire, it will get wet.....  "Rust Never Sleeps" .... (Neil Young ....I think???)

Here's something to look at.  On the sisiy bar fender chrome pieces, there is a small threaded hole just in front of the turnsignal stalk screw.   I haven't had chance to look at the non-sissy bar models, but.... if you have it too, you could mount a L-bracket there to hook on to.  NOTE: the hole is metric threads

Simple solution.....Hook the front plastic hooks around the shock mounts....Then I hook the back two hooks around the sissy bar frame.....That's what I do. No chance of slipping off and the plastic doesn't scratch. I have lugged HUGE coolers, bags, etc this way, without a problem.

Edit....I see you have a s40 and no sissy bar.....sorry......but the front ones will still hook to the shock mounts

Aren't i already using the shock mounts to hook the front cords? I was thinking of putting some tape on the fender (masking) for this trip coming up this weekend to prevent any scratching. I may be able to find a better solution in the future (like those mentioned above) but I don't have much time left before I leave on Friday. So do you think this will be safe/secure?

Why yes you are!.  LOL..DUH is me Undecided

The pictures were HUGE on my screen and I didn't scroll over enough.....Good idea with the tape. I would double it probably....I am sure it would be ok for short term, provided the straps are tight with no slack.....Those plastic/nylon hooks are tough little suckers and are not likely to let go. I have had mine for years.

instead of tape, why don't you use a small piece of that chrome door trim for your car.

I have one of those. Works GREAT! I use it everyday. About $20.00, and well worth it.
