Motorcycle requirements
09/30/08 at 12:30:38

Anyone know of a simple way to see what is required by the Federal Dept of Transportation...the vehicle code..or whatever tells us what we can and can't have on our bikes by state? Specifically I'm looking for CA laws referring to fender requirements, mirrors, license plate mounting, lights..etc. Thanks folks!

Cool thanks, well that site answers my question about mirrors..only one is required. Also just curious if you HAVE to have a front fender, rear fender or both. And about the license plate, just wondering if that side mount is gonna fly or if I'm gonna have to worry about the law bugging me.

California statues on License plates:

License Plates
4850. (a) The department, upon registering a motorcycle, shall issue to the owner one partially or fully reflectorized license plate.

4852. Motorcycle license plates shall measure seven inches in length and four inches in width, and the characters on the plates shall have a minimum height of one and one-half inches and a minimum width of nine-sixteenths inches, and shall have a minimum spacing between characters of three-sixteenths of an inch.

5004.5. Any owner of a motorcycle manufactured in the year 1942 or prior thereto shall be issued special license plates for the motorcycle.

5060. (2) Special interest license plates authorized under this article may be issued for use on a motorcycle. That license plate shall contain a five digit configuration issued in sequential numerical order or, pursuant to Section 5103, in a combination of numbers or letters. There shall be a space to the left of the numerical series for a distinctive design or decal and the characters shall contrast sharply with the uniform background color. No motorcycle plate containing a full plate graphic design is authorized. Those particular special interest license plates that were issued prior to the discontinuation provided by this paragraph may continue to be used and attached to the vehicle for which they were issued and may be renewed, retained, or transferred pursuant to this code.
5061. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, if the department permits the issuance of a special interest license plate for display on a motorcycle, the department shall not approve any design for that plate that incorporates either or both of the following:
    (b) Any special interest license plate issued for display on a motorcycle is subject to the same fees that are collected for the issuance and retention of special interest license plates on other vehicles.
5101.3. (a) Any Pearl Harbor survivor may apply for special license plates which shall run in a separate numerical series and shall contain the words "Pearl Harbor Survivor." The plates may be issued for any vehicle, except a vehicle used for transportation for hire, compensation, or profit, or a motorcycle.

You can't get any more specific than straight from the horse's mouth (or other end in this case):

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=veh&codebody=&hits=20

The California Vehicle Code direct from legal info dot california dot government.  Equipment of vehicles starts at 24000.

27600.  No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or
more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with
fenders, covers, or devices, blah blah blah.

No fenders required for two wheel motorcycles.  Anyone says otherwise tell 'em to cite the Code Section. The licence plate:

5200.  ...   (b) When only one license plate is issued for use upon a vehicle, it shall be attached to the rear thereof....
5201.  License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the
vehicle ... shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible,
and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible.
The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor
more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate
shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground

I think there may be a lumination requirement in the lighting section.  But vertical mount is not prohibited.

Wow you guys are good. Paladin...Verslagen told me you'd have the answer haha. Alright so I'm covered on the vert mount, the mirrors, fenders..Oh and I don't really plan on riding w NO fenders, but once I get this engine working I just want to make sure I can test ride it around until I decide on the final rear fender setup. Since you guys are so good I have one more for you. I purchased the same signals Strangeling used on his bobber for sale. They come with an amber dual filament bulb similar to the 1157 but with the smaller glass like a 5007. I want to make the rears running/turns so need some red bulbs. Not only can I not find a red version of this bulb..I also can't find the amber ones that come with it. The seller told me he believes they're custom made for the signal. SOMEONE has to make them then. I'm waiting for him to contact his distributor but anyone have any ideas till then? I also want a clear set so I can run clear up front instead of amber.

Does the bulb look like: http://www.bulbtown.com/3496_MINIATURE_BULB_BAY15D_BASE_p/3496.htm

Bulbtown doesn't show a red or amber replacement.
