tach/dwell meter?
09/19/08 at 18:53:08

If I buy an old school tach/dwell meter to help tune my carb idle and mixture settings how do I interpret the readings for a single cylinder engine?  Normally these came with a switch for an 8 cylinder / 6 cylinder engines.  Or should I just invest in an after market tachometer?  If so what do you guys recommend.

Welll.... first,  the auto tach's won't work......

If you are on a tight budget and all you are going to do is use it for tuning... do this.  Get the dealer to set the idle for you.  Ride the bike home and the make a recording of it. (MP3.... old casstte...  ????).  Then pull it out every once and a while, and listen for a difference in pitch.

Other wise spend  the money on a correct tach.

dwell is just how long the sparky is on, not that there's much juice after a bit

just divide the reading by 8 or 6  ie 1200/6 is 200

of course I don't exactly remember, does it hook up to the coil or to the sparky?  If it's the sparky then it's one to one.

Easiest and cheapest would be to go with something like the ENM digital tach. All you do is wrap one wire around your plug wire and ground the other wire. No calculations to make- gives you direct digital readout of rpms on our bikes.  Battery should last you about 8 years, longer than most people keep their bike. You can just attach it when you want to set the idle, or permanently mount it to your bike. All for under $30.

Google "ENM PT15B2" to find a seller.
