Finally got the Savage to a place I can ride it often and now the rear brake has started squeaking really loud. Anyone know of anyway to cut that squeak down? Pads seem fine, not grinding but just a regular brake squeak when coming to a stop. Really starting to annoy me. Maybe I'll just spray some WD-40 on it!

Even with chamfering the leading edges of the jmaterial as it meets the drum, mine squeals. I notice, or think I notice, it is lessened a bit when I clean it inside. Butm even that doeasnt solve it,
My next plan is to have a good look in there next time the wheel is off & see if thers any ({[ SAFE)}] way to attach vibration absorbing stuff , (rubber?) to the shoes. It is irritating, it sometimes goes away if I get on the brake a bit harder.

In other words, live with it (which sucks, because I've heard buses with quieter brakes). Anyone change the pad and find the noise less (or worse)?

I really hardly use it. 18,000 miles, third set of front pads, and the back looks like new. Stops me from rolling at lights on hills, and somehow gets used in panic stops...then it's just grabby as he!!.
Anyone have any ideas on reducing the grabbyness? I've been considering adjusting the pedal stop to less than full tire lockup. Kind of half-a$$ed ABS.

I definitely reduced the grabiness.
Using a grinder, I cut 4 or 5 slots across each shoe, about 1/2 way thru the friction material & then chamfered each slot, I have about 50% of the contact I had. I can use the rear brake, slowly increasing pedal pressure & its a lot better than before. I can USE the brake now. It used to be way too touchy. Itll still lock up, but I can feel it coming now.

I cleaned the inside of the brake unit ... paper towel, air gun and paper towels again. Looked real preettttyyy . Well first stop on the new tire and SQUEAK!!!!!. WOW.... and it was loud too. Well it's been two weeks of riding.... it is now getting almost back to no squeak....

Hi Gary

Try taking the bike for a run and keep gently working the rear brake. The idea is to get the rear drum and the lining hot...not too hot...but hot. You may have to repeat this on several seperate occasions but it usually does the trick. Same applies to a front brake.

Do it at about 40 to 50 mph...alternate from gentle to firmer pressure on the hand lever / foot pedal.
