Exhaust Tape

Ok,

My exhaust header is pretty much toast, extreme blueing/golding, and rust.

I'm contemplating using some 1200 grit wet/dry paper on it to see what I can do.

Any idea how thick the chrome is? Will it be super easy to sand right thru it? I'm wondering if I can sand off the blueing/golding, then re-polish the chrome.

I've used some of the 'blue removal' products to no avail.

Last ditch is to wrap it, with some black exhaust tape. If I do that, any suggestions on a brand of tape that someone has experience using?

The exhaust on mine isn't terrible, it's just lightly blue-golded all around so it looks natural-ish. However, I need a new muffler so it'll look silly soon...

So you'll be harded pressed to ever take the tape off again. But some like that look. Second thing, the tape picks up moisture and stinks. moisture causes corrosion. If it's in decent shape, I'd paint it.

I wrapped my header because it was just not going to clean up very good. I really like the look. I'm not worried about moisture or corrosion. I'll burn through the bike before that pipe is done. I bought my tape through Lick's Customs. They sell rolls in 25' lengths (which is perfect) most others only have 50' rolls. The tape will smoke and stink for a day or two. Mine is broken in fine, don't even notice any smell anymore, but then a skunk can't smell his own scent anyway. Cheesy

I am very much against exhaust tape, and here is the reason.

Exhaust tape covers the exhaust pipe, so the pipe is not exposed to airflow.

This causes excess heat to build up in the exhaust pipe, and this heat has only two ways to go:
- stay in the exhaust gases, which will be much hotter (so the muffler will overheat, and you will have to rejet the carb to richen a bit)
- creep back up into the head, overheating it... which means the head will overheat only at the exhaust side, and warping may occur.
