motor shuts off while riding
09/08/08 at 19:03:40

I am thinking about getting a 2000 Suzuki Savage.  The owner has told me that when he puts the throttle down over half way, then the motor shuts down.

If he gradually increases the throttle (but don't go past half way) then it is ok.
Has a miss at very high rpm around 70+ mph (tune up?).
just had new front fork seals replaced and new front brake pads, new oil change and filter. starts up every time.

Can someone help with this?

Is this going to cost alot to fix?

Is it worth my time to go ahead and buy it?

Thanks.

How are you about gettin' grease up to your elbows (not that the fix will include this) ?

Readin' instructions and asking questions?

Is this bike anywhere near my house?

If it is, it's probably a bad deal, give me his number so I can give him what for.    Roll Eyes

Hmmmmm  Most likely a carb problem.    Could also be air leak in intake somewhere, or low spark.

$2000 for a 2000 with a problem.... the bike better be beautiful.

The bike only has 4,000 miles on it. The body and paint are in great shape.

No, it is not in California. Its on the east coast.

I was reading that it could be rubber boots? What is that?

Do you think that I need new carburetor or just a cleaning? Thanks.

Carb cleaner in the gas will most likely fix it and running it if it hasn't been run much. I like SeaFoam best it lubes the carb too.

So you think cleaning out the carbs with seaform is the answer? Wow, I thought it would a lot more to it.

I might try to get him lower on the price.

Clearly the bike has fuel or air starvation problems.  Fuel flow restriction, float problems, lots of possible causes. Seafoam might help if it is just a buildup but it is best to assume the problem is more complicated than that if you are negotiating price.  Two grand is pretty steep as others have said.

Unless you're pretty familiar with how a carb works and how to tune up a motorcycle you could have a lesson ahead of you.  The good news is the bike is simple, the bad news is that it is not so simple that you can always dump some tonic in the tank and drive away grinning. Might work, but prepare for the worst.

Agree.... use the issue to negoiate.   East coast.... where????

I just drilled in to the link I provides and it says $1730 avg retail.    Also use that to your advantage....   maybe $1500.... or lower....  how's the "Priceline" commerical go.....

Other things it might be:
Spark plug,
plug wires,
coil,
short in kill switch near throttle.

( I'm no expert, just guessing on these )
None of them should cost much to fix

When it shuts down does it cough and sputter, or just stop running?

I just paid 2500 for a 2006 with nothing wrong with it, except 16,700 miles on the clock. This was halfway between retail and trade-in value.

I'm in VA and my 2006 with 225 miles (very low) on it was $2850 about a month ago.  Petcock will need replaced, as it only runs on RES, but otherwise it is like a new bike.  $2000 sounds high to me for bike with problems.  Watch Craigslist for a while as summer is now ending--prices will be falling fast.

Citgolf04, I had a very similar problem with a car...

It would cough, spit and virtually die out any time I "stomped" on the gas, but if I "spoon fed" then it would do OK until about half throttle.

It turned out, after A LOT of investigation, that one of the rubber manifolds was cracked (on the underside, so you couldn't see it until after takedown and inspection)...
...so, cracked rubber manifold, air would seep in with throttle too open, and fuel starvation (too much air, in proportionally too little fuel) would cause the problem.

A cinch to fix, it's possibly the little rubber manifold that joins the carburator to the engine intake.
Replace that and you're a happy man!  Wink
Of course, it's my suggestion, I hope it helps !  Smiley
