minor down shifting problems on the go.
09/05/08 at 13:43:40

Hi, at times my 2007 S40 has a hard time finding lower gears. When it does this, I will have to come to a complete stop and rock the bike before it will go down the gears. This is a recent problem and the bike has about 4000 miles on it. Any thoughts would be cool. Thanks in advance.

First, how old is the oil???

Second,  I get the same thing sometimes.   I have to let out on the clutch lever until the gears just start to engage, then pull in and shift easy.   It happens at lights sometimes too.  Yea, I know,..... the safety course said you should be in first as you roll to a stop at the light so you can get away fast in a emergnecy ....  what can I say....  Huh

Yeah, the oil only had around 1000 miles on it if I remember right. Today though I changed it along with a new filter, so I'll see what happens. Hopefully the problem will go away.

Well,  the tranny is fairly old shool.  I expect it's someting that if all the conditions are right, will happen again.

BIG thing is to remember, let the lever out just a bit.  Maybe a little pressure on the pedal.

It's normal, My 05 S-40 does it too. If you let out some clutch to make the tranny spin just a tad then pull the clutch in, you should be able to continue down shifting. I encounter this little glitch several times a day.

happens most when you need an oil change or are low.

Try 15w-50 wt. oil.

a little pressure on the shifter and let out the clutch slowly and it should shift every time.

Bike trannies are different than cars,...
They don't like to change at a stop,.. or too slow,...that's normal...
But if it's a new problem,...Check your oil, and your clutch play,...
