Posts: 287	petcock help 09/02/08 at 08:35:29 following my other thread i took someones advice and sealed off the vacuum line to the petcock and have been running on prime with great success. no stalling in 4 days ! does this mean i need a whole new petcock assembly or are they rebuildable ?

Sorry to be the bearer of this bad news to the second person within a week; but nobody so far has been able to locate a diaphragm or kit for our bike, and the replacement petcork isn't cheap. There is a conversion to manual on/off in the tech section, but that's only if you want to remember to turn your gas on and off each and every time you start and kill your bike. (Just like we had to do all bikes back in days of old.)

There. I've done the dirty deed again. It's somebody else's turn next time! Grin

Good news, you have a clue what's wrong.
Bad news, there aren't any rebuild kits available.

So what's the problem? gas in the vac line? stalling/stumbling at speed?

Gas: I would pull the petcock, disassemble it and figure out what's the problem. If you got a pin hole in your diaphram, you have a choice, convert to manual or get a new one.

Stalling/stumbling: replace vac line, check filter screen for dirt. There's one above the petcock and one above the float valve.

greetings forum,
i am new here and suzuki dr 650 owner. my friend purchased a 1996 savage this summer. over at the thumper/suzuki/dr/ search petcock you find that a petcock from a yamaha raptor atv 2003 will fit the dr650. we applied this knowledge to the savage. the $20 yam petcock fits right on his 96 and there is no vacuum line so you need to cap it off with a vac cap from the autoparts store. hope this is useful to you savage folks. for the dr it was 20 vs $70 for the oem petcock.

Yamaha raptor atv 2003 petcock as a $20 replacement for our petcock ills. Great news !!

This is significant if it proves out -- if you do this mod please post a thread in the Tech Section as to exactly what the Yamaha part numbers are, what the gasket part number is (if not an "O" ring style that comes with the new petcock) and exactly what you have to do to make it work.

Even if it is a very simple drop in replacement, please post all the part numbers involved in the Tech Section. That way we have a ready reference long term memory of the specifics of the trick.

Posts: 97	Re: petcock help Reply #12 - 09/03/08 at 04:55:02 just go to mrcycles and look up the part under yam atv. see the raptor 2003 fuel tank, as i recall you will see a nice exploded parts view. and yes it does come with the oring gasket. mrcycles gives good service to the east coast, if your on the w/c try bikebandit or order via the local yam shop.

ok then. I went and ordered the petcock assembly for a 2003 raptor 660 (they call it a fuelcock assembly). i ordered it from bike bandit for 20.89 plus 7and change shipping to massachusettes.
if it doesn't work i can send it back to bike bandit and get my money back (less 20% restock, but that beats special ordering from a local dealer where i'm stuck with it)
I'll have to seal off the vacuum tube on the carb.
the o ring looks a little different but will probably work.
i'll repost when i get it done, gotta wait 10 days for shipping.
if it works i'll post in the tech section as well.
thanks everyone for all your help/advice and support.
as usual people on this site are the "bomb"
