Rough Estimate on Brake Changes?
08/29/08 at 13:10:50
As I am over 6,500 miles now. I just want to get a rough estimate of mileage between brake changes? Is it like 30,000 like on a car. Though because I do mostly highway, I am over 170k on the car and have only had to change the brakes once. Under normal conditions, how often should the brakes be changed?

5k-10k for front, x2 or x3 for the back but your results may vary widely. If you get on your bike and log 100 miles a trip without touching the brakes until you're done, you might get 50k out of 'em.

A look at the front brakes takes mere seconds. The rear? Look when you change the tire. Chances of wearing them out are pretty slim, IF, you ride like most & apply the front more often. Most of the WHOA Power comes from the front anyway.

As others already said, depends heavily on riding style. My '02 was completely spent at 2600 on the oem front pads (and the first 1000 miles were put on by someone else). But I do a lot of city and twisty riding with not much engine braking, and I practiced quick stops for the license test on those pads. The pad material also matters. Somewhere around here is a thread about EBC pads lasting longer and squeaking less.
Lucky for us changing the front pads is quite easy and cheap.

My first set lasted 13K, but I right next to grinding metal on metal. Second set was replaced after a little under 12K, but with enough material to go a thousand more. But why? Original rears are nearly unused.
I am in mostly "stop and go" city riding, but time my lights and do considerable engine braking. I only do a full force stop about twice a decade.

My first brakes were toast at 5,000 miles( front), replaced with EBC's & got better "feel", less "Squeel" & better service life. Your mileage tells me it's time to have a good close look/

When i bought my 05 a few months ago, the front pads were down to the metal with just 2700 miles on it..
I guess the prev owner never touched the rear brake..

just changed mine at 6800 as i got it with 4000 miles on it I dont know if it was OEM or not but they look like NISSIN
They have a NI symbol NI and the symbol could be a stylised SS
a number underneath JB CA 00
and on the reverse 0F 28 Y2.
The Bike is now in the UK since 2004 and believed to be a 2000 build 2001 registered (US).
I have fitted EBC stocked by a local Suzuki Stealership.
Is Nissin fitted as new in US for savages? or has it had one change circa 2003/2004? before she emigrated

Good to know I'm not the only one with crazy low mileage on the front. Mine had started to scrape too, but luckily only on the very edge of the rotor, not the useful part.
