Missing Air Filter, what kind of symptoms
08/24/08 at 19:50:44

Hi all,

I bought Lancer's jet kit and was going to do a full overhaul on a '96 Savage that wasn't really performing consistently the way I like. I made adjustments to the air bleed to no avail.

I decided I would check all the usual suspects, spark plug, air filter. Opened the air box to discover, guess what, NO air filter.

What kind of performance problems would I have experienced without it?

I'm going to get a new one tomorrow but I just wanted to know if any of you had any insight as to what I would have seen?

Hehe - a hiigh flow air filter, like the one you describe, would make it run lean Smiley

I doubt if there would be immediate symptoms of running without  a filter, you might  expect pitted cylinder walls, pitted valve seats, depending on how long this machine ran with no air filter. A few miles may be ok, but if was like that for a running season or two, you may have valve job and cylinder honing in your future. The purpose of the filter is to keep dust, insects and small mammals out of the combustion chamber.

When I was a teen - we would run cars and bikes without filters on race nights. We figured we were going to destroy the machine anyway, so why bother with engine/wild life protection Smiley

Would it have also caused adjustments to the pilot screw to be somewhat 'ignored' and horrible backfires ?

Not to mention whole bugs being sucked into the carb and gumming up the works!

No air filter is going to run wicked lean.  I mean wicked lean.  Not a good idea, at all!

So here's a question, not to hijack the thread, but....

I'm looking at doing the oldfeller mod to the air filter.  I currently have a machine that is probably running a bit lean, I have the occaisional backfire when decellerating, esp. on a downhill.  Can I expect these to get lots worse?  Should I not think about modding the air filter unless I also do some carb and exhaust changes?

Is the Pope Catholic?

Any time you add air, your a/f mix is going to lean out even more.  You will have to rejet to compensate.
