Hi all, Am looking for some reconciliation, I am planning a bit of a trip on the bike but with all the gremlins I read in the form about the cam chain I'm a bit tools and threes. She sounds fine with no clunks or anything out of the ordinary,so I don't want to start pulling it apart. Could anybody tell me if there is any noise I should be listening for if the cam adjuster is warning me that its on its way out, such as rattle or whizzing which I got on my yam XS650. Is there any way of telling on the savage that there might be a problem with the cam chain without having to start on it with the spanners Embarrassed

The number of miles before it needs a chain seems to vary, widely & wildly. If you have over 10,000 miles on it, why not get a gasket & sealer & just have a peek? Or, IF you are planning on keeping the bike, you know you WILL eventually need a cam chain, so why not just get all the parts together & have a look? You can measure the extension of the tensioner, look at the mileage & extrapolate to decide when to look again. The tensioner mods, the slot & pin & the welded on eye, are just Good Ideas & would make a great addition to anyones Savage.

I reviewed your posts hoping to find out a little about your bike.

You're keeping secrets. What distance do have on the clock?

If you have 10k miles or 16km's then I would recommend looking at it.

Feet are known to smell, I haven't heard of any that hear. You'll hear/feel clunking at your right foot as the tensioner starts to wobble to the point it will hit the case.

Hi there, I got that and thanks, the bike is 1990 and has 18596 miles on the clock and I bought her in London from one of natures last gentlemen called Tattoo Dave who couldn't do enough for me when I went down there to collect it,he had the bike for a short time and did a general tidy up changed oil and bits and pieces but didn't know about the cam chain, maybe the previous owner did the chain there's no way of getting in touch. The bike is running fine but I just want to make sure. I have been looking for a savage for a long time but anything reasonable is few and far between In my part of the world. Plenty in Germany but it would have cost me a fortune to import.I am going to try and email a photo to the address at the bottom the forum if it comes through maybe you could put it on to the form for me. I don't know how , it's my daughter who does the computer for me and she's away just now. At my age there's so much crap in my head it takes a bit of pounding and time for some of it to move over to let the new stuff in. All the best to you and your's...kenny

I don't know where that went or what went but something went somewhere. Anyway I am away back to sea on tuesday. I have ordered a complete set of gaskets from Germany (87euros) and when I come back I hope to try and buy a tensioner and chain from the usa (thats not right) U.S.A the land of the savage,maybe someone could advise me on where to get the parts i'm looking for a chrome oil filler cap and choke knob as well,,cheers,,kenny

At 18k it's certainly time to look at it.
I did mine at 22k and some have done it as early as 10k. But very few have gone 30k before getting it done.

My picture server said it might be full. Have to find out how soon.

Quick lesson, your picture has to be stored at a site like bikepics.com. There's also savageriders.com for $10 a year run by paladin. It's a small fee for permanent storage.
1. upload picture (not to suzukisavage.com, they're full too)
2. open the picture at the site that you've uploaded at and right click on the image and open the properties, highlight the address and copy it.
3. link the picture in a post by clicking the image icon
4. [img ] [ /img]

5. preview the post to see if it displays correctly
