drain the float bowl. Catch it in a clear container.

Carburetor, holds gas in the bowl. IF it wont drain( screw in the nipple poking down), its empty, explaining the thing not running. If it drains, then you gotr gas,,, or water, or something, Id have a look,

Heeeeyyy Abbbotttt!!!!!!

I need a pic up here for this guy....

Can you find the choke? Its on the carburetor. Look at the carb from a low point. See the bottom looks like it could hold some gas? Its supposed to.. Look in the middle of the bottom. Theres a nipple poking down with a screw stuck in the side of it. Poke something under it & loosen the screw till it starts leaking.

Ok, thanks for your patience. I think I found the right thing. When I open the screw up, liquid which smells very much like gas comes out. Do I want to empty this thing, or was I just checking to see if there was gas inside?

Check to see if there's a little wire clamp.
Use a pair of pliers to enlarge it and move it off the nipple.
If still stuck, get a grip with fingers and twist.
If still stuck, use pliers but try not to tear up the hose.
If still stuck, try and push the hose off.

Usally the 1st way works, but they can be stubborn to the point of just cutting it off when they're completely hard.

Oh holy cow.  The fun I could have with this post you made, if I wasn't such a nice and polite young man, whose clean mind is above reproach. Grin

ZeroStar, go ahead and drain it into a cup or the bottom of a pop can or something.  Then close the drain and set your petcock to "pri" for 7 1/3 seconds before switching it to "run."

Sounds like a dead battery to me.

I cannot emphasize enough how helpful Savage Greg's Savage Companion cd would be for you.  It has pictures of just about every part on the bike, with clear labels of the components to each part.  At any level of expertise it is useful, but starting out "mechanically retarded" (sorry, that expression tickled me) it would be a most useful tool.  Don't forget the Clymers manual as well.

You can jump it, but it may be that you need to buy a new one as well.  I have not experienced it yet, but I'm told that a weak battery can cause a weak spark, hence a poorly running engine.  If you look at the front of the battery box, there should be a cutout that allows you to check the fluid level in the battery.  If that is low, you need to add water.

If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage at the battery.  As I recall, it should be turning out 12.5 volts or so.  I'll have to look that up to be sure.

So I got my battery pulled out (much thanks to Sandy Koocanusa and all others involved) and it looks to be 2 degrees north of completely toast. Took it down to the local bike shop this morning and of course they don't have it in stock  Tongue so they're trying to fill/charge the old battery to give me a few more days until the new battery comes in. If that doesn't work, looks like I'm bikeless for a few days  Angry

Thanks again to all who helped!  Smiley

There is a learning curve being a bike owner. Dont take it to a mechanic unless you are just simply unwilling to do the work. Its so dead simple, with the reference materials & support here, anyone can survive this bikes' maintenance. The $$$ saved on labor pays for the tools, time & again. The experience pays dividends in self satisfaction. Being your own mechanic can also mean the difference in riding home & calling someone. Be patient with yourself, learn about the bike & I bet the experience will make you feel all warm & fuzzy about buying it.
