New bars without mods?
08/14/08 at 18:05:03

I'm looking for options.  My oem bars are bent.  Not sure how bad, but the mechanic at the dealership said that they are pretty bad out of alignment and I might need new handlebar clamps too.  Not real happy about that, those things aren't cheap.  Anybody know where I can find replacement parts on the not so expensive side, and if there are any other bars that would replace my buckhorns (I have a 1996) without having to tweak the rest of the controls too much?

Thanks,

If I'm not mistaken you can use any bar that's one inch as long as it's straight enough on the bottom to sit in the clamps. That opens up a world of options, just check ebay. Not too pricey either.

I put a set of ten inch mini apes on mine and all I had to do was re-route the cables.

The world is your oyster, slurp it up.

You can use anything, but if you get universal bars 1" in diameter with at least 4" of rise you'll have less issues with the tank.  otherwise you'll need to get the high risers that come with the drag bars.

The clamps themselves won't bend and I think the studs are replaceable.  But I'd just straighten them.

yes those might work, they have about the same pull back as the stock buckhorns.

2 issues to be aware of,

they are dimpled.  our controls don't need dimples.  Look at few that show the back side and you'll see that are indentations where the controls go.  HD does make holes in their controls in case someone wants to route the cables through the bars.

second, they are mostly flat.  and by that I mean that you might've had stock buckhorns pointing down in the back.  these are lower so it'll be hard to do that.  Just be aware that it'll be different.  I would recommend that you go into a independant dealer or salvage yard and try on a few.
