What would cause my Spark plug to foul
08/13/08 at 13:35:01

Bike was running rough, Spark plug was bad so i replaced it and it ran great.  But less than a full tank later it fouled again.  Mainly black soot, with a little tan by the gap.  Any Ideas?

either get a hotter plug or go down one jet size.

What exhaust are you running?
main jet?
air box or cone?

are you idling mostly or mid throttle or WOT?

Well I normally just cruise around town, but it happend shortly after i ran it 75 at WOT down a country road...

The exhaust is some aftermarket pipe put on by previous owner, and it is still the factory airbox.

It backfires once in a while, but from what I understand thats normal for these bikes.

Thone,

If this just started, you can test your petcock for a fuel leak into the vacuum line.

Just crimp the vacuum line, then go to PRI on your petcock.  Go riding.  Whenever you shut off the engine, turn the petcock selector back to ON.  Repeat this each time you ride it.  If the problem stops, report back.

IHTH!

I had this same problem with a used bike I bought.  After getting an upgraded carb, changing to a K&N filter and a Sportster muffler I still had the problem and with advise from this site, I now only ride on "Prime" and the problem has pretty well gone away.  I also got a regular gas at slightly higher octane and this seems to have fixed the problem.  I also did the mod to get to the spark plug which has made life lots easier.  I do believe I had a problem with the old carb since I measured the old float specs and it was about 35mm.
