What's the Best DIAGNOSTIC Tach for Our Bikes?
08/11/08 at 21:22:15

I'm not interested in mounting a tach on my Savage (see signature).  I would, however, like to own a tach that I could use to spot check RPMs.  I realize I need to get one that is set up for a two-stroke engine.

What diagnostic tachs are out there that work good for our bikes?

TIA!

don't know what best means - the tinytach is cheap and very easy to use - induction through the plugwire - 3-5year battery then just toss it - reacts a little slow 1 screen update per second I think.

Love the idea but the site says its for a 2 stroke engine. Is there a way to set it for 4 or 2 stroke?

It works just fine on our waste spark engine as they spark every revolution like a 2 stroke, just noting there to burn on the top of the exhaust stroke normally. Max

If my engine is turning over at recommended idle, what should the speedo be saying in first gear, at idle. rolling on flat ground? Or 2nd might be better, if it will do it & not Buck & jerk.

Given that the 6500 redline is at 35mph in 1st, 1000-1200 rpm would be 6mph, give or take a 0.5. Of course this depends on what gearbox you have, chain conversion, tire size, speedometer calibration, plus the engine would still be doing work even on flat ground from rolling resistance.  Not exactly "the Best DIAGNOSTIC Tach for Our Bikes".  Grin  Easier to record the sound of the exhaust and throw it in a audio editing program that shows the waveform: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1204154431/17#17

I wonder if you could adapt one of the digital bicycle speedometers as a tach.  Snip off the sensor and put something that closes the circuit when it detects the charge in the spark wire.  ...I guess that's what the ENM does already.  Cheesy

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't try this on an LS650.

Why?? ........ at idle, the RPM is with no load.  But, moving in 1st or 2nd gear means there IS a load, which means your RPM would probably drop into the 800 or 900 range (maybe less).  that means the oil pressure would drop to the 1-2 PSIG range (or less)....

Already replaced a head for bad cam journal from the PO.

It will buck and jerk at anything under 1800, maybe a little lower, even when decellerating to a stop.

I like it. I just received the tach from Amicks and the Sigma is on its way. May I ask how you mounted/attached the tach (adhesive?) and how you routed the wires? I can't tell from the posted photo. It looks very professional and I want to make sure mine lasts until the battery gives up!  Cool  Thanks!

Ess,

I, also, just received the tach from Amicks.  It did not come with any instructions or documentation.  Did yours?

TIA!
