drive belt tension
08/05/08 at 11:25:26

been wondering why my belt is so squeeky.  Felt it and i can't even get CLOSE to 90 degree turn, I can't even get 45 degree.  When we say 90 degree, we're saying turn the belt up until you're holding it like a cup, upright like that, right?

I think I already know the answer to this - but there's no way to loosen the belt without a torque wrench is there?  I cannot afford a torque wrench right now, though I may be able to in a month or so, but this belt is crazy tight.

The ninety degree method is you take a hold of the belt about halfway between the rear pulley and the drive pully and twist it until the belt is vertical. If you can do it with just a little bit of strength, your good, if you can turn it past that easily, it's too loose, if you can't get it to that point, your too tight.

You adjust the belt tension by the adjusting nuts at the rear wheel attached to the axle bolt. Loosen the axle bolt to take the bite off of it and play with the adjusters until you have it as close to perfect as you can.

If i loosen the axle bolt won't I have to use a torque wrench to put it back on?  I obviously don't know much about how this little tightening mechanism works, but can you tighten/loosen the belt without messing with the axle bolt, or can you loosen the axle bolt and safely retighten it without a torque wrench?

Yes, to adjust the belt you need to loosen the axle.
and it would be preferred to retorque it to about 50 ft-lbs.
Which is about all you can handle with a standard sized rachet.

I personally do not use a torque wrench on my axle bolt, I just tighten it as tight as I can get it. But I am NOT saying you should do that. If you feel you should use the torque wrench as recommended, then do so.

No, you have to loosen the axle bolt so the rear wheel can move back and forth as you make the adjustments.

I guess I'll just do it with my socket wrench and a bar around it for some extra leverage, thanks.

I finally have a quiet belt. Took the advice of one forum member who just replied "It's the tension!" Was doing soap and water every few weeks. Took the time a few weeks ago and loosened the belt, rode around the block and was still chirping. Tightened it a bit, took a ride and have been chirp free since then. A bit of trial and error should get you a quiet belt.
