Buying a '99 Savage but the turnsignals don't work
08/04/08 at 18:55:23

I'm in the process of buying a '99 Savage but the turnsignals don't work.  Is there a fuse that could need replacing, or is there a more complicated setup?  Any ideas about where to start trying to fix this would be a huge help.  Also, the brake light doesn't work with the rear brake lever, I can see that the switch cable has slipped its connector. so that should be a simple re-connect.  It's not something I wanted to try with the exhaust pipe so close and so hot!  I can't wait to get this one through the inspection and on the road.  Thanks in advance for any advice about the turnsignals.

Might just be the flasher unit went bad.Go to Autozone, and get an electronic flasher, about 8-9 bucks. It's under the right side(brake side)of the gas tank towards the front. It has an L shaped plug.

Do I need to remove the gas tank to access the electronic flasher?  Thanks very much for the fast reply.  What a great forum!

Depends on how big your fingers are,but you should be able to get to it.See the silver cylinder shaped piece at the front of the tank? That's where it is.I think stock it is black, and square, and it's mounted in a rubber holder.

The tank is a beauty! Was it easy to fit to your Savage?

Yes,if you have a welder.Look at the front bolts, they are bolted into what is called a spacer nut. It's a nut about 2" long.Ground it down a little to fit the tank's mounting tabs.Bolted it to the tank tabs, set tank where I wanted it,and tacked the nut into place. The rear mount is the stock mount off of the original tank(tank was junk).Bolted it in place then tack welded it to the tank.Removed tank, and final welded it.
